China was one of the first civilizations to engage in printmaking. Ink, paper, printing from cut wooden blocks and moveable type were all invented in China. This unique book provides both a helpful introduction to the history and traditions of printmaking in China and a comprehensive guide to traditional and contemporary printmaking techniques, including detailed and illustrated sections on different techniques (single color, watercolor, poster color, stencil, and dabbed printing).

Drawn from the Chu-tsing Li collection of modern and contemporary Chinese paintings--the finest and most comprehensive of its kind in the West--A Tradition Redefined is the first in-depth exploration of the development of Chinese ink painting during the last half century. These extraordinary paintings demonstrate the reinvigoration of classical techniques and materials by artists throughout Mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and abroad working with distinctly contemporary perspectives. Illuminating essays situate these new works within the rich history of ink painting in China, revealing how avant-garde artists, schools, and trends evoke traditional and early modern Chinese art while engaging with developments in the international art world. With artist biographies and handsome reproductions of many previously unpublished paintings, this book is essential for scholars and collectors of Asian art as well as for participants in the increasingly globalized contemporary art scene. Distributed for the Harvard Art Museum Exhibition Schedule: Arthur M. Sackler Museum, Harvard University Art Museums (November 3, 2007 - January 27, 2008) Phoenix Art Museum, Arizona (June 28 - September 14, 2008) Norton Museum of Art, West Palm Beach, Florida (October 11, 2008 - January 4, 2009) Spencer Museum of Art, University of Kansas, Lawrence (February 11 - May 24, 2009)

"Sibao today is a cluster of impoverished villages in the mountains of western Fujian. Yet from the late seventeenth through the early twentieth century, it was home to a flourishing publishing industry. Through itinerant booksellers and branch bookshops managed by Sibao natives, this industry supplied much of south China with cheap educational texts, household guides, medical handbooks, and fortune-telling manuals. It is precisely the ordinariness of Sibao imprints that make them valuable for the study of commercial publishing, the text-production process, and the geographical and social expansion of book culture in Chinese society. In a study with important implications for cultural and economic history, Cynthia Brokaw describes rural, lower-level publishing and bookselling operations at the end of the imperial period. Commerce in Culture traces how the poverty and isolation of Sibao necessitated a bare-bones approach to publishing and bookselling and how the Hakka identity of the Sibao publishers shaped the configuration of their distribution networks and even the nature of their publications.Sibao’s industry reveals two major trends in print culture: the geographical extension of commercial woodblock publishing to hinterlands previously untouched by commercial book culture and the related social penetration of texts to lower-status levels of the population."

Picturing Technology In China written by Peter J. Golas and has been published by Hong Kong University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-12-01 with Art categories.

Although the history of technological and scientific illustrations is a well-established field in the West, scholarship on the much longer Chinese experience is still undeveloped. This work by Peter Golas is a short, illustrated overview tracing the subject to pre-Han inscriptions but focusing mainly on the Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties. His main theme is that technological drawings developed in a different way in China from in the West largely because they were made by artists rather than by specialist illustrators or practitioners of technology. He examines the techniques of these artists, their use of painting, woodblock prints and the book, and what their drawings reveal about changing technology in agriculture, industry, architecture, astronomical, military, and other spheres. The text is elegantly written, and the images, about 100 in all, are carefully chosen. This is likely to appeal to both scholars and general readers.

This book is a comprehensive and inviting introduction to the literary forms and cultural significance of Chinese drama as both text and performance. Each chapter offers an accessible overview and critical analysis of one or more plays—canonical as well as less frequently studied works—and their historical contexts. How to Read Chinese Drama highlights how each play sheds light on key aspects of the dramatic tradition, including genre conventions, staging practices, musical performance, audience participation, and political resonances, emphasizing interconnections among chapters. It brings together leading scholars spanning anthropology, art history, ethnomusicology, history, literature, and theater studies. How to Read Chinese Drama is straightforward, clear, and concise, written for undergraduate students and their instructors as well as a wider audience interested in world theater. For students of Chinese literature and language, the book provides questions to explore when reading, watching, and listening to plays, and it features bilingual excerpts. For teachers, an analytical table of contents, a theater-specific chronology of events, and lists of visual resources and translations provide pedagogical resources for exploring Chinese theater within broader cultural and comparative contexts. For theater practitioners, the volume offers deeply researched readings of important plays together with background on historical performance conventions, audience responses, and select modern adaptations.
