La traducción de Fernández de Villegas del ‘Infierno’ en coplas de arte mayor está rodeada de una extensa glosa del mismo traductor cuya fuente principal es el ‘Comento sopra la Comedia de Landino’ (1481). En este libro se abordan temáticas hasta hace poco desatendidas, como el contexto del que emerge –la corte regia–, su fecha de composición, sus problemas de transmisión textual y los mecanismos de traducción empleados –los cuales se analizan desde el marco de los ‘Translation Studies’–. Asimismo, cómo el contexto político, cultural y literario del autor influye en ambas instancias hermenéuticas: por un lado, el texto poético y la glosa se reescriben de acuerdo con intereses propagandísticos de la Corona y, en especial, de Fernando el Católico; por otro, en las amplificaciones de la glosa se observan no solo temas, actitudes e intereses típicos de un humanista, sino también las paradojas y tensiones propias del humanismo castellano del XVI.

Este trabajo se basa en el estudio de la diferenciación y desarrollo del humanismo español. Este libro trae hasta nuestro momento la cuestión del barroco hispánico, haciendo memoria activa de aquella su peculiar lectura de mundo con la intención de salvar para nosotros algo de aquel barroco que amenaza con desaparecer con cada presente que no se reconozca mentado en él. Un solo imaginario, un, por la fuerza unificado, mundo simbólico funcionó en aquel tiempo, definido, desde finales del siglo XVI hasta la década de los veinte o treinta de 1700, como un verdadero clima, como una «esfera» dentro de la cual los puntos interrelacionados constituyen un sistema. Cabe añadir acerca de esta constelación político-psicológica que se trataba de un sistema «sereno», el cual proveía de hipótesis no sólo para el hecho mismo del mundo y su desenvolvimiento histórico, sino también afirmaba la posibilidad de alcanzar un vislumbre y aquilatar un significado para aquel «otro» mundo, que se constituye siempre en contrafigura (y, acaso, como espectro) de este. Las fuerzas culturales que actuaban en aquella peculiar constelación aventuran una explicación fundada en el hecho de la irrupción que la sobrenaturalidad realizaba en el plano de la realidad cotidiana, manifestándose de modo taumatúrgico en la historia.

Francisco de Quevedo (Madrid, 1580-1645) was well known for his rich and dynamic style, achieved through an ingenious and complex manipulation of language. Yet he was also a consistent and systematic thinker, with moral philosophy, broadly understood, lying at the core of his numerous and varied works. Quevedo lived in an age of transition, with the Humanist tradition on the wane, and his writing expresses the characteristic uncertainty of a moment of cultural transition. In this book Alfonso Rey surveys Quevedo's ideas in such diverse fields as ethics, politics, religion and literature, ideas which hitherto have received little attention. New information is also provided towards a reconstruction of the cultural evolution of Europe in the years prior to the Enlightenment, and thus the scope of the book extends beyond that of Spanish literature.
