Heidegger ha osservato che "ogni tradurre deve essere un'interpretazione. Al tempo stesso però vale anche il contrario: ogni interpretazione e tutto ciò che è al suo servizio è un tradurre". I limiti dell'interpretazione sono pertanto anche i limiti della traduzione e viceversa. Muovendo da questo assunto, il libro propone una scelta di saggi sul tradurre con esemplificazioni attraverso l'analisi di testi di Goethe, Rilke, Walther von der Vogelweide, Mörike, Musil, Handke, Umberto Eco e Daniele Del Giudice. Oltrepassando i confini tra lingue e generi letterari queste ricerche convergono verso una "critica della traduzione" d'impronta ermeneutica che riflette pure il pensiero messianico di Benjamin, il cui saggio "Il compito del traduttore" occupa un posto centrale del volume. Nata tra vincoli imprevedibili e le scelte tra soluzioni imperfette, la traduzione assume una valenza simbolica in sintonia con l'assunto di Giovanni Battista Vico di situare la ricerca della verità "tra le tortuosità e le incertezze della vita pratica".
