As Swiss psychiatrist and psychotherapist, Carl Jung, wrote: “history is not contained in thick books, but lives in our very blood”. Set mainly in Yorkshire and Tyneside, this historical novel deals with the descendants of the Byrne family, whose founder was a Danish Viking – Bjorne the Red. Trail of the Viking Finger follows the lives of the Byrne family over a 900-year period, from 1066 onwards. In particular, John Bean is interested in the shared DNA of the family and comments on how several behavioural characteristics, often violent, move between each generation. Although the story is fictitious, Trail of the Viking Finger uses much of John’s own family tree as a basis to this story. John weaves the characters in and out of historical situations throughout the centuries as they deal with the ever-changing society, making it a fascinating, unusual read. In particular, John explores how the Brynes react to British social and political events throughout history including the post-Norman Conquest, the Black Death, the Peasants Revolt, The English Civil War, the Industrial Revolution and World War One. Whilst exploring the family politics of the Byrnes, John also mirrors some of his own life experiences in Trail of the Viking Finger, one of which includes the result of having an unsuccessful operation to cure Dupuytren’s Contracture – known as the ‘Viking Finger’. After the operation, John learns that his DNA was recognised as being of Anglo-Saxon or Danish Viking origin, something that has been descended from his ancestors. This book will appeal to those who enjoy historical fiction as well as those who are particularly interested in family trees. In addition, readers of Edward Rutherfurd’s historical novels may compare Trail of the Viking Finger to his works, not least his first, Sarum, with its 10,000 year storyline.

Carpe Diem If you want to explore Newfoundland and the maritime provinces of Canada, please bear in mind that you have to slip into a warming anorak even in summer. Every rain free day is a gift at the edge of the Labrador Current. Rubber boots and good rain wear are also essential. You can admire icebergs from Greenland on the island in the north as late as June to July, and the small harbours are often decorated with ice floes until well into the summer. But when the sun breaks through, this region of Canada opens up in all its diversity and drama. In the north, a former Viking settlement bears witness to the earliest community, even before the Europeans discovered America and later established themselves there. Small, picturesque fishing villages tell of a hard struggle for existence. In the past as well as today. Lonely stretches of land give flora and fauna the opportunity to face the harsh weather. The capital, St. Johns, impresses with colourful wooden houses and a lively pub culture. The oddball humour of the population is unique, and they all love their musical heritage. Carpe diem! Seize the day!

CHILDREN of MIDGARD The year is 961 and King Harald Bluetooth of Denmark has his gaze firmly set on the Western Kingdoms of Norway where his nephew Harald Greycloak reigns. Bluetooth has declared Greycloak as his vassal King of Norway and will claim the establishment of the Jomsvikings. In doing so he will solidify the order, building a keep for the warriors he intends to use to create a fleet of men who will rule the seas under his command. However, the order is older than one man's claim and consists of many who have their own destinies separate from the feuding monarchs. There are men of honour and worth and there are those who seek naught but power and privilege, searching only to prosper from the misery of others. There are tales of a legendary ring and a child who is said to be the progeny of the All-Father. TABLE OF CONTENTS Introduction Chapters 1 through 32 Epilogue ======= Free eBook VANDRAD THE VIKING Long after King Estein had joined his fathers on the Little Holm beyond Hernersfiord, and Helgi, Earl of Askland, had become but a warlike memory, the skalds of Sogn still sang this tale of Vandrad the Viking. It contained much wonderful magic, and some astonishingly hard strokes, as they told it; but reading between their lines, the magic bears a strong resemblance to many spells cast even at this day, and as for the sword strokes, there was need for them to be hard in Norway then. For that was the age of the making of many kingdoms, and the North was beginning to do its share........ TABLE OF CONTENTS CHAPTER I . THE WEST SEA SAILING CHAPTER II. THE BAIRN-SLAYERS CHAPTER III. THE HOLY ISLE CHAPTER IV. THE ISLAND SPELL CHAPTER V. ANDREAS THE HERMIT CHAPTER VI. THE HALL OF LIOT CHAPTER VII. THE VERDICT OF THE SWORD CHAPTER VIII. IN THE CELL BY THE ROOST CHAPTER IX.
