This outstanding thesis characterises the aerodynamic flow around a container freight train; investigating how changing container loading configurations affect the magnitude of aerodynamic forces measured on a container. 1/25th scale moving-model freight train experiments were carried out at the University of Birmingham’s TRAIN rig facility to investigate slipstream velocities and static pressure, as well as measuring, using a specifically designed on-board pressure monitoring system, the aerodynamic loads on containers. Results were compared with full scale data and assessed in terms European standards for trackside worker and passenger safety limits. Rail vehicle aerodynamic studies have tended to previously focus on high speed passenger trains in line with increases in train speed. The research presented within this thesis highlights the issues associated with the aerodynamic development around a freight train, providing the foundations for further research and a basis from which to develop international safety standards in relation to freight, as well as high speed trains.

This volume entitled "TRANSAERO - A European Initiative on Transient Aerodynamics for Railway System Optimisation" contains the results of the contributors during the project th symposium which took place in Paris, France, on 4th and 5 May 1999 hosted by the International Union of Railways, UIC. This symposium was organised within the framework of the BRITE/EURAM project "TRANSAERO" under contract BRPR-CT9S-0067. The project has been co-financed by the European Union within the Fourth Research Framework Programme. More than 100 participants followed the invitation to the symposium. This great response shows the continuing interest in a relevant topic of railway technology and offered us the opportunity to present the recent results of intense European collaboration to the international community of railway aerodynamic experts. In the last few decades, mobility in Europe, based on automobiles for individual traffic and lorries for freight traffic, has grown more and more; yearly growth rates of more than 10% have often been reported by statistics. Even with a fully developed construction programme for motorways and similar high-performance roads, these growth rates cumulated over the years cannot easily be handled in an environment-friendly way. The European Commission has therefore given distinct political signals to get more passengers onto the railways. This policy represents a clear challenge for the next few decades for European railway companies: the considerable increase in mobility in a Europe with falling borders will cause a doubling of the traffic volume within the next 10 to 20 years.

Challenging Dynamics Of High Speed Train written by A. S RANGWALA and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-10 with categories.

Key Features:Intimate relationship between superconductivity and magnetic fields to achieve high speed highlighted. Dynamics between wheel, rail and track explained. Dynamics braking and its significance explained. Extensive coverage of magnetic levitated super fast trains will benefit engineering students and practicing engineers. Examples will electronic spread sheet type of calculation for loads, stresses, dynamic response and stability.About the Book:Magnetically levitated bullet trains are the most interesting development of the new millennium, recording travel at unheard of speed levels. The train levitates above the tracks using electromagnets to create a nearly friction less ride, without making contact with the ground. Moving more smoothly and quietly than wheeled mass transit systems, the power needed for levitation is mostly to overcome aerodynamic drag.A confluence of superconductivity and magnetic technologies has produced this spectacular event. Superconducting magnets do not dissipate energy to maintain the magnetic field. A superconductor levitated above a permanent magnet remains in stable equilibrium. Resistance to flow of electric current in the conductor vanishes, so the magnetically levitated coaches operate without external energy. At the same time, however, initial cost of development and installation is prohibitive. This book provides tools for design and operation of a massive locomotive pulling a heavily loaded train through mountainous regions. Extracting maximum power, emit acceptable levels of exhaust pollutants, accelerate smoothly and safely come to stop are of significance. Passenger coaches must not pitch and roll when subjected to strong cross winds, and while negotiating sharp curves.Safeguards from dynamic operating conditions are required to avoid failures from: Train derailment due to deformed wheel and deficiencies in track pathway ? Establish dynamic loads from interaction between wheel, rail and track ballast ? Design compliant mount between vehicle body and bogie wheel assembly ? Rolling contact stress and thermal fatigue in wheel from abrupt brake application.

This book provides an introduction to ground vehicle aerodynamics and methodically guides the reader through the various aspects of the subject. Those needing specific information or a refresher can easily jump to the material of interest. There is a particular emphasis on various vehicle types (passenger cars, trucks, trains, motorcycles, race cars, etc.). However, the book is focused on cars and trucks, which are the most common vehicles in the speed range in which the study of ground vehicle aerodynamics is beneficial. Readers will gain a fundamental understanding of the topic, which will help them design vehicles that have improved aerodynamics; this will lead to better fuel efficiency, improved performance, and increased passenger comfort. The author’s basic approach to the presentation of the material is complemented with review questions, application questions, exercises, and suggested projects at the end of most of the chapters, which helps the reader apply the information presented, either in the classroom or for self-study. Aside from offering a solid understanding of ground vehicle aerodynamics, the book also offers more thorough study of several key topics. One such topic is car-truck interaction, when one vehicle (usually the smaller one) is overtaking the other. There is a direct and instant benefit in terms of safety on the highway from understanding the forces at play when one vehicle passes the other in the same direction and sense. Chapters examine: • Drag • Noise and vehicle soiling • Wind tunnels and road/track testing • Numerical methods • Vehicle stability and control • Vehicle sectional design • Large vehicles: trucks, trailers, buses, trains • Severe service and off-road vehicles • Race cars and convertibles • Motorcycles • Concept vehicles
