This publication contains four national studies, conducted in Spain, France, the United Kingdom, and Italy, that collected data on the role of training as an element of support for business start-up and as an essential factor for the survival of newly established businesses. The study of the Spanish situation examines public and private bodies whose purpose is to encourage or support entrepreneurial initiatives. It outlines the history of the small and medium-sized enterprise over the last 10 years, examines failure rates and causes, and analyzes the profile of the new entrepreneur. The report on France examines instruments set up and managed by the government and local authorities over the past 10 years to encourage facilitating their access to resources. The report on the United Kingdom discusses the following topics: new enterprise creation, aid programs for start-up businesses, women's self-employment, training for business start-ups, and factors for success. The report on the Italian situation: (1) provides information on new business creation; (2) reviews national and regional measures that promote business creation; (3) describes available training for business creation; and (4) provides three successful cases of training for business creation: Law 44/86, the Umbria Integrated Manufacturing Program, and the Business Innovation Centre, Trieste. A synthesis report consists of four chapters dealing with the phenomenon of business creation, aid programs, courses offered by the training bodies, and the successful entrepreneur. (YLB)

Structured around the idea that innovation is at the core of successful entrepreneurship, this insightful guide by Meyer and Crane establishes innovation as a necessary first step before writing a business plan or developing a financial model. With a focus on pragmatic methods for gaining industry and customer insight and translating this insight into innovative product and service solutions, Meyer and Crane help students design robust business models, financial projections, business plans, and investor presentations. New Venture Creation is devoted to helping students develop compelling business ideas. This is based not only on the authors’ well-known research in product and service innovation, but also on their extensive experience as successful entrepreneurs and investors. In the updated Second Edition, part I guides students through six elements that comprise a clearly defined and focused venture: defining your target industry; defining your target customers; defining the needs and wants of those customers; defining winning product and service solutions; carefully designing a strong business model; determining competitive positioning, and then testing the entire concept against a small population of target customers—all before writing the plan. Think, design, test, and learn are the guiding principles. Part II then focuses on different types of investors and the process for raising capital, creating realistic financial projections, writing a concise but powerful business plan, organizing the venture team, and creating a compelling pitch that speaks to the needs and concerns of investors. The book also includes a number of independent case studies that focus on product, service, and business model innovation—all from recent ventures by students as well as recent college or master’s level graduates.

Entrepreneurship has emerged as a dominant economic development strategy. Therefore, the study of business creation, also known as entrepreneurship, has become extremely important for policy makers. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the extent to which perceptions of participants attending a seminar on entrepreneurship change once they attended the seminar. An assessment was made of those participants attending the seminar to determine if their desirability and intention toward starting a business changed once additional information about starting a business was presented. Findings indicated no statistical significance in a change of intent by subjects in starting a business after attending the pre-counseling seminar. While results from this study found no statistical significance in a change of intent, there was a change in desirability. Subjects in this study had a greater desire to start a business after attending the pre-counseling seminar.
