Training for Transformation is an approach to community organization encompassed in three books which enables people to 'read their reality and write their own history' using a combination of group processes, socio-economic analysis and organizational development processes. Since its inception 40 years ago, Training for Transformation has been put into practice in over 60 countries globally. But how have people been using these materials in their communities over this period? Training for Transformation in Practice brings together the experiences of activists who have adapted these materials to their own social and cultural contexts. The book describes the roots of Training for Transformation in people's struggles in the global South to gain political and economic independence and to overcome poverty. It outlines the theoretical origins of the approach and also includes Impact Assessment Tools, developed by activists who have used the training in their work. The book is inspiring reading for students of adult education and community organizers.

Training for Transformation Book 4 is a practical and accessible workbook for community development workers. It recognises that the only changes which effectively transform the lives of poor people are those in which they have been active participants and focuses on five issues which have become more and more prominent in the concerns of communities throughout the world: the environment; gender and development; ethnic and racial conflict; intercultural understanding; building participatory governance. Each section contains a rich selection of relevant material designed to stimulate interest and debate, including simulations, real life stories, telling statistics, news articles and poetry and drama from local communities. The authors have drawn on their direct experience of working on community development programmes in South Africa and the USA, as well as feedback from many other countries where the Training for Transformation approach has been adopted. Training for Transformation Book 4 will be ideal for adult education workers, social workers, community development workers, church workers and trade union educators, and all organizations and individuals concerned with the process of transforming society.

Theory And Practice Of Dialogical Community Development

Theory And Practice Of Dialogical Community Development written by Peter Westoby and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-07-18 with Business & Economics categories.
This book proposes that community development has been increasingly influenced and co-opted by a modernist, soulless, rational philosophy - reducing it to a shallow technique for ‘solving community problems’. In contrast, this dialogical approach re-maps the ground of community development practice within a frame of ideas such as dialogue, hospitality and depth. For the first time community development practitioners are provided with an accessible understanding of dialogue and its relevance to their practice, exploring the contributions of internationally significant thinkers such as P. Freire, M. Buber, D. Bohm and H.G Gadamer, J. Derrida, G. Esteva and R. Sennett. What makes the book distinctive is that: first, it identifies a dialogical tradition of community development and considers how such a tradition shapes practice within contemporary contexts and concerns – economic, social, political, cultural and ecological. Second, the book contrasts such an approach with technical and instrumental approaches to development that fail to take complex systems seriously. Third, the approach links theory to practice through a combination of storytelling and theory-reflection – ensuring that readers are drawn into a practice-theory that they feel increasingly confident has been 'tried and tested' in the world over the past 25 years.
