Having been exposed to the work and importance of a Justice of The Peace in The Bahamas and becoming aware of the lack of and need for training of the same, after much research, coupled with the experience gained as a supervisor of the enrollment section of the passport office, I developed a curriculum and started teaching the rudiments of the office. Over the past 6 years I have taught over 400 licensed and aspiring Justices. The challenge is found in the fact that there is no requirement for one to be trained in order to be appointed as a JP. Primarily, the appointment comes because of one's political allegiance to their particular party. This of course can be very dangerous when taking into consideration the vast scope of the sworn duties of a JP. Many persons see the JP as someone who just signs forms and photos and drafts affidavits. But the work involves so much more important, even legal matters.
