Planted forests account for 7 percent of the global forest area, covering 290 million hectares (ha) of land. About 131 million ha of planted forests are intensively cultivated for productive purposes with fast-growing trees (FGTs). Fast-growing trees have been developed and used for millennia to provide wood and non-wood products to rural communities, as well as direct and non-direct benefits to urban societies. Globally, FGT plantations are comprised of a variety of tree species in temperate, subtropical and tropical biomes. The objective of this publication, Innovative practices in the sustainable management of fast-growing trees – lessons learned from poplars and willows and experiences with other fast-growing trees around the world, is to address the knowledge gaps and the current and potential development of FGTs at the global scale by highlighting successful, innovative FGT practices that can help sustain people and the environment. Further, this book aims to make this information relevant and accessible to a diverse range of stakeholders involved in the agricultural and forestry sectors, including researchers, landowners, technical operators and planners, and policymakers. In this context, the authors have proposed a comprehensive list of references as part of the methodology. In total, 43 authors from nine countries have contributed to this book bringing their ideas, experience and expertise to advance innovation in FGT science, management and policy.

Smallholder farmers are commonly thought of as farmers who manage two hectares of land or less. By some estimates they represent approximately a quarter of the world’s population, and manage half of the world’s arable land; they generate billions of dollars in forest and timber products. Collectively, smallholders have the transformative potential to achieve sustainable development and respond to climate change at landscape scales. In order to achieve this collective action, smallholders can and do organize themselves into organizations such as associations and cooperatives, i.e. forest and farm producer organizations (FFPOs). Empowering forest and farm producer organizations will be critical to delivering on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) for mitigating climate change as part of the Paris Agreement. This document has three main premises: first, that smallholders’ farms are businesses, and the decisions that smallholders make about their farms are primarily based on their expected return on investments. The second premise is that the business of growing trees on farms can increase family farmers’ economic resilience and improve the net environmental impact of family farming. The third premise is that small farmers’ business of growing trees will be more economically successful if they can organize themselves to achieve scale. What follows from these premises is the purpose of this document: supporting producer organizations to collect information on their tree assets (i.e. trees grown on their farms) for commercial purposes.

Trees outside forests (including fruit trees, trees in parks, fields, those growing in the wild and as amenities), together with forests and other woodlands, contribute to the structure of the landscape, generate numerous environmental and social services, and yield important food, drink and fuel products as well as meeting other domestic needs of urban and rural populations. However, trees outside forests are not well documented and receive little attention in the formulation of national forestry policy and planning. This publication seeks to fill this gap, by providing information on the role of these resources and options for their integration in territorial management policies.

Agroforestry For Degraded Landscapes written by Jagdish Chander Dagar and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-01-04 with Technology & Engineering categories.

This book presents various aspects of agroforestry research and development, as well as the latest trends in degraded landscape management. Over the last four decades, agroforestry research (particularly on degraded landscapes) has evolved into an essential problem-solving science, e.g. in terms of sustaining agricultural productivity, improving soil health and biodiversity, enhancing ecosystem services, supporting carbon sequestration and mitigating climate change. This book examines temperate and tropical agroforestry systems around the world, focusing on traditional and modern practices and technologies used to rehabilitate degraded lands. It covers the latest research advances, trends and challenges in the utilization and reclamation of degraded lands, e.g. urban and peri-urban agroforestry, reclamation of degraded landscapes, tree-based multi-enterprise agriculture, domestication of high-value halophytes, afforestation of coastal areas, preserving mangroves and much more. Given its scope, the book offers a valuable asset for a broad range of stakeholders including farmers, scientists, researchers, educators, students, development/extension agents, environmentalists, policy/decision makers, and government and non-government organizations.

Forest inventories throughout the world have evolved gradually over time. The content as well as the concepts and de?nitions employed are constantly adapted to the users’ needs. Advanced inventory systems have been established in many countries within Europe, as well as outside Europe, as a result of development work spanning several decades, in some cases more than 100 years. With continuously increasing international agreements and commitments, the need for information has also grown drastically, and reporting requests have become more frequent and the content of the reports wider. Some of the agreements made at the international level have direct impacts on national economies and international decisions, e. g. , the Kyoto Protocol. Thus it is of utmost importance that the forest information supplied is collected and analysed using sound scienti?c principles and that the information from different countries is comparable. European National Forest Inventory (NFI) teams gathered in Vienna in 2003 to discuss the new challenges and the measures needed to get data users to take full advantage of existing NFIs. As a result, the European National Forest Inventory Network (ENFIN), a network of NFIs, was established. The ENFIN members decided to apply for funding for meetings and collaborative activities. COST– European Cooperation in Science and Technology - provided the necessary ?n- cial means for the realization of the program.
