Il quaderno si compone quest’anno di cinque scritti. Si apre con Giancarlo Macchi Jánica che continua ad affrontare gli aspetti spaziali dei recenti mutamenti demografici. Il secondo articolo, di Emanuela Stoppoloni, costituisce la rielaborazione della tesi di laurea magistrale in Geografia (relatrice A. Guarducci), con applicazione al contesto delle Crete Senesi di un innovativo metodo di geografia della percezione messo a punto da un gruppo di ricerca interdisciplinare dell’Università di Firenze. il lavoro successivo, di Alessandro Palumbo mette al centro della dialettica capitalistica il tema dello spazio: questo saggio dà forma ad una riflessione sulla globalizzazione come odierno sistema interrelazionale economico e sociale. Giancarlo Macchi Jánica continua ad affrontare il tema dell’applicazione dell’intelligenza artificiale in campo geografico. In questo testo si tratta, appunto, il tema delle simulazioni, ed in particolare delle simulazioni ad agenti a livello spaziale. L’ultimo scritto è di Anna Guarducci: La carta manoscritta del Granducato di Toscana al 100000 dell’Archivio Nazionale di Praga e i rapporti con la mappa perduta di Giovanni Inghirami del 1831, per tale ragione, viene qui pubblicata nelle sue 60 sezioni (con in più il frontespizio e i due fogli del quadro d’insieme). Giulio Tarchi presenta una breve appendice dal titolo La georeferenziazione della carta al 100000 conservata a Praga, che costituisce un’anticipazione di un lavoro più ampio.

Il volume è composto da sette saggi, che evidenziano la molteplicità degli approcci delle discipline geografiche e quindi le diverse attività di studio e di ricerca del nostro laboratorio. Il volume presenta poi una novità: la riedizione di un vecchio testo, che riproponiamo a più di cinquant’anni dalla sua prima edizione. Si tratta del saggio di C. Greppi, dal titolo Le case dei contadini, che faceva parte del volume collettivo L’uomo e la terra. Il saggio di M. Tomassini apre il volume, lo studio è frutto di una lunga e approfondita ricerca condotta dall’autrice sul campo in Galles. Lo scritto Città e campagne: geografia delle aree di pertinenza delle sedi urbane tra XIII e XIV secolo, autore G. Macchi Jánica, riprende alcune indagini distributive sull’insediamento medievale in Toscana, con un’attenta riflessione sulla semplificazione che spesso caratterizza i modelli storiografici. Con il saggio La cartografia storica come strumento di conoscenza del territorio e delle sue dinamiche C. Bartoli riporta invece l’attenzione su un tema tra i più centrali nell’attività di ricerca del laboratorio: la cartografia storica e il suo utilizzo come fonte primaria per lo studio delle dinamiche sociali di appropriazione dello spazio. L’impegno del Laboratorio di Geografia nel settore dell’intelligenza artificiale è evidenziato dai due scritti Spazio e simulazioni per agenti in geografia (autore G. Macchi Jànica) e Conflitti ambientali in aree costiere: un approccio con le Reti Neurali Artificiali (autori L. Deravignone e A. Londei), che si qualificano come sperimentazioni importanti anche sotto un profilo internazionale. Con Il rapporto uomo e ambiente in Jared Diamond: osservazione e descrizione in Collasso, A. Palumbo offre una rilettura critica dell’opera di J. Diamond.

Il quaderno comprende sette scritti sul tema della Geografia storica, anche con applicazioni quantitative, con una speciale attenzione per le modalità di libera circolazione della conoscenza sul web. Il primo, sulle mappe storiche della Val di Cornia, deriva da una relazione presentata da Anna Guarducci e Leonardo Rombai al seminario organizzato nel 2009 dagli archeologi dell’ateneo senese. Il contributo di Giancarlo Macchi Jànica prosegue il progetto di costruzione di banche dati demografiche e indaga i processi di “desertificazione” e di parziale ripopolamento di settori marginali della Toscana, come quelli appenninici e collinari interni. Gli altri cinque scritti danno conto dell’attività principale svolta dal Laboratorio, incentrata sulla cartografia storica toscana, per la costruzione del catalogo on line Imago Tusciae; l’articolo di Anna Guarducci offre una prima presentazione dei risultati, anche ai fini di possibili applicazioni alle ricerche territorialistiche e paesistiche. Seguono i saggi di Cinzia Bartoli e Francesco Pacini su corpi di mappe conservate negli archivi di Firenze e di Lucca, da loro puntualmente schedati nel corso del progetto. Lo scritto di Anna Guarducci e Leonardo Rombai è incentrato su un’importantissima raccolta cartografica: le circa 2500 mappe toscane dell’Archivio Nazionale di Praga. Luca Menguzzato e Giulio Tarchi danno invece conto del complesso lavoro di geo-localizzazione in ambiente GIS di un campione di circa 6000 mappe pre-geodetiche.

Since 1970, based in an isolated building situated on the peninsula of Posillipo, Pica Ciamarra Associati (www.pcaint.eu) has acted as a laboratory of architectural and urban design which has gradually incorporated new members and new energies over the time: using a multidisciplinary approach, the roots of the architectural practice lie in the intensive theoretical and practical work begun in the early 1960s by Massimo Pica Ciamarra. Since then the practice has been marked by a continuous relationship with Le Carré Bleu Feuille internationale darchitecture and leading members of the cultural milieu of Team 10: this has led to constant attention to everything that lies beyond form, to the relation ship with contexts that also include non-spatial contexts, and to high levels of integration and dialectical discussion. According to Pica Ciamarra Associati, a design transcends the approaches of a single sector, providing simultaneous solutions to contradictory requirements, combining utopia and practicality. The poetics of the fragment: it mediates between architecture and the urban dimension; some designs also have the aim of becoming absorbed within a context as 'informed fragments'. This monograph is the result of an intensive period of work and consists of two interacting parts. It stems from research into the archive of the studio Pica Ciamarra and conversation with the members of the architectural practice. Organised diachronically, the book tells the long story, unfolding over a period of over fifty years of a team of Neapolitan architects and designers, who have maintained the lively spirit of the practice which is still geared towards the future. The textual and iconographic account tells a story and offers an interpretation that highlight the vibrant atmosphere of the studio, based on a consistency of thought and action, and fuelled by an interest in many different forms of knowledge. The contextualisation of the events related to the studio, as they unfolded over time, is wide-ranging, coherent and connotative. Antonietta Iolanda Lima, professor of history of architecture at the University of Palermo, has always tried, through theory, teaching and design, to disseminate the importance of history which can embracing innovation and tradition to an equal degree, forming a new architectural language. According to her view of architecture, history and design are closely connected, a 'single entity' as is reflected by her career. Since the 1980s, her academic work has gained increasing importance, a way of avoiding narrow sectoral approaches in the training of future architects, offering a holistic stance of the history of architecture and an architecture that contributes to shaping critical thought and a thriving cultural life.
