C., May 30, 31, and June 1, 1893 Gentlemen OF the association OF american physicians The length and promise of the programme, as arranged by the Council for the present session, leaves little but official duties for its presiding officer, and my feeling is that my best presidential contribution to this meeting would be to sit as a respectful listener. But in accepting the honor you have conferred upon me I cannot refrain from availing myself of its associated privilege to say a word of introduction to the work that is before us. No one who appreciates how fully the membership of this Associa tion justifies its name can honestly discharge the duties of your highest office and ignore the obligations which rest upon us as a representative body. We have just celebrated, as nations count, our fourth birth day, yet the word American stands before the world for all that is most advanced in science. As we enter upon the new century-year it should be with the full appreciation that the theory and practice of medicine have given place to the science and art of medicine. The nature of this change cannot be more tersely or aptly described than in the words of Ruskin: The work of science is to substitute facts for appearances, and demonstrations for impressions, which plainly means that all our errors in science are subjective.
