Transdisciplinary engineering transcends other inter- and multi-disciplinary ways of working, such as Concurrent Engineering (CE). In particular, transdisciplinary processes are aimed at solving complex, ill-defined problems, or problems for which the solution is not immediately obvious. No one discipline or single person can provide sufficient knowledge to solve such problems, so collaboration is essential. This book presents the proceedings of the 27th ISTE International Conference on Transdisciplinary Engineering, organized by Warsaw University of Technology, Poland, from 1-10 July 2020. ISTE2020 was the first of this conference series to be held virtually, due to the COVID-19 restrictions. Entitled Transdisciplinary Engineering for Complex Socio-technical Systems - Real-life Applications, the book includes 71 peer-reviewed papers presented at the conference by authors from 17 countries. Industry and society are complex socio-technical systems, and both face problems that can only be solved by collaboration between different disciplines. Collaboration between academia and practice is also needed to develop viable solutions. Many engineering problems also require such an approach, which is known as Transdisciplinary Engineering (TE). This book presents the proceedings of the 26th ISTE International Conference on Transdisciplinary Engineering, held in Tokyo, Japan, from 30 July - 1 August 2019. Cyber-physical systems (CPS) are one of the key concepts of Industry 4.0. Despite their great potentials for industrial value creation, there are challenges, such as a significant increase in complexity, as a result of which the development status of Industry 4.0 is behind expectations. This book addresses this issue with the following research design: In addition to providing a comprehensive foundation of industrial CPS and Industry 4.0, four studies are conducted, each consisting of an exploratory research part and a design science research (DSR) part. In doing so, four perspectives are directed at the topic of industrial CPS: A systemic, a stakeholder-centered, an organizational and a holistic. Digital human modeling (DHM) is an active field of research directed towards the goal of creating detailed digital models of the human body and its functions, as well as assessment methods for evaluating human interaction with products and production systems. These have many applications in ergonomics, design and engineering, in fields as diverse as the automotive industry and medicine. This book presents the proceedings of the 6th International Digital Human Modeling Symposium (DHM2020), held in Skövde, Sweden from 31 August to 2 September 2020. In many countries, the development of railway science is of great significance to both the economy and society, and transdisciplinary studies involving railways and other fields has also become more important in recent years. This book presents the proceedings of the 7th International Symposium on Innovation & Sustainability of Modern Railway (ISMR 2020), held in Nanchang, China from 23 - 25 October 2020. The symposium has been held biennially since 2008 and is principally aimed at expanding the scientific partnership between Russian and Chinese transport universities in the field of railway transportation. It is organized in a collaboration between the Federal Railway Transport Agency, Irkutsk State Transport University (IrGUPS) and East China Jiaotong University, and enables scientists from Russia, China and Mongolia to come together to discuss breakthrough technologies, as well as the problems of innovation in the secure operation of modern railways. Despite the disruption caused by the global pandemic, 89 submissions were received for the 2020 edition, 38 of which were selected after review for presentation and publication here. These comprise 12 papers dealing with railways and mechanics, 20 covering railways and computer sciences, and 6 related to railways and management, together with the 2 contributions of the invited keynote speakers (professor Xiaoyan Lei, principle of East China Jiaotong University, and professor Erol Guler from George Mason University).
