This textbook deals with the fundamental principles of fluid dynamics, heat and mass transfer. The basic equations governing the convective transfer by fluid motion of matter, energy and momentum, and the transfer of the same properties by diffusion of molecular motion, are presented at the outset. These concepts are then applied systematically to the study of fluid dynamics in an engineering context and to the parallel investigation of heat and mass transfer processes. The influence of viscosity and the dominant role of turbulence in fluid motion are emphasised. Individual chapters are concerned with the important subjects of boundary layers, flow in pipes and ducts, gas dynamics, and flow in turbo-machinery and of a liquid with a free surface. Later chapters cover some of the special types of flow and transfer process encountered in chemical engineering applications, including two-phase flow, condensation, evaporation, flow in packed beds and fluidized solids.

In the present book the reader will find a review of methods for constructing a certain class of asymptotic solutions, which we call self-stabilizing solutions. This class includes solitons, kinks, traveling waves, etc. It can be said that either the solutions from this class or their derivatives are localized in the neighborhood of a certain curve or surface. For the present edition, the book published in Moscow by the Nauka publishing house in 1987, was almost completely revised, essentially up-dated, and shows our present understanding of the problems considered. The new results, obtained by the authors after the Russian edition was published, are referred to in footnotes. As before, the book can be divided into two parts: the methods for constructing asymptotic solutions ( Chapters I-V) and the application of these methods to some concrete problems (Chapters VI-VII). In Appendix a method for justification some asymptotic solutions is discussed briefly. The final formulas for the asymptotic solutions are given in the form of theorems. These theorems are unusual in form, since they present the results of calculations. The authors hope that the book will be useful to specialists both in differential equations and in the mathematical modeling of physical and chemical processes. The authors express their gratitude to Professor M. Hazewinkel for his attention to this work and his support.

This book presents an account of the NATO Advanced Study Institute on "Energy Transfer Processes in Condensed Matter", held in Erice, Italy, from June 16 to June 30, 1983. This meeting was organized by the International School of Atomic and Molecular Spectroscopy of the "Ettore Majorana" Centre for Scientific Culture. The objective of the Institute was to present a comprehensive treatment of the basic mechanisms by which electronic excitation energy, initially localized in a particular constituent or region of a condensed material, transfers itself to the other parts of the system. Energy transfer processes are important to such varied .fields as spectroscopy, lasers, phosphor technology, artificial solar energy conversion, and photobiology. This meeting was the first encounter of this sort entirely dedicated to this important topic. A total of 65 participants came from 47 laboratories and 16 nations (Belgium, Czechoslovakia, F.R. of Germany, France, Greece, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, The Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Switzerland, Turkey, United Kingdom, and the United States of A America). The secretaries of the course were: Ms. Aliki Karipidou for the scientific aspects and Mr. Massimo Minella for the admini strative aspects of the meeting.

Energy Transfer Processes In Polynuclear Lanthanide Complexes written by Shun Omagari and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-01-17 with Science categories.

This book describes the luminescence mechanism of polynuclear lanthanide complexes, focusing on energy transfer processes using a combination of experimental and theoretical approaches. Lanthanide complexes show intense luminescence from the lanthanide ion through sensitization by the organic ligands. The high chromaticity of the emission and the long lifetimes of the complexes are particularly attractive for applications such as organic light-emitting diodes and bioprobes. Polynuclear lanthanide complexes (coordination polymers and clusters) have attracted considerable interest for functionalization by energy transfer between lanthanide ions. At the same time, such extra processes complicate the luminescence mechanism, hindering the rational design of functional polynuclear lanthanide complexes. Firstly, the book explains the principle of the theoretical methods, and then describes the concentration-quenching mechanism in coordination polymers. It also examines the effect of intrinsic spin–orbit coupling arising from lanthanide ions on the ligand-to-lanthanide energy transfer efficiency and the mechanism of back energy transfer (the opposite of sensitizing energy transfer) in lanthanide clusters. This sets the stage for the final topic: the suppression of back energy transfer by energy transfer between lanthanide ions in lanthanide clusters, which is of critical importance, showing that the lanthanide clusters can be considered a new generation of functional and efficient luminescent material and could also provide a breakthrough in lanthanide photophysics.

Molecules in liquid and solid media are exposed to strong inter action forces from the surrounding medium. The formulation of a comprehensive theory of chemical processes in condensed media is consequently an elaborate task involving concepts from several areas of the natural sciences. Within the las~ two and a half decades very notable results towards the formulation of a 'unified' quantum mechanical theory of such processes have in fact been achieved, and by the variety of physical, chemical, and biological processes which can be suitably covered by this framework, the new theory represents an adequate alternative to the transition state theory. The present work has a two-fold purpose. Firstly, to provide a reasonably organized exposition of some basic aspects of these developments. This part emphasizes the fundamental similarities between chemical and other kinds of radiationless processes and includes the derivation of the most important rate expressions without resorting to involved mathematical techniques. The s- ond major purpose is to illustrate the 'unified' character of the rate theory by analysis of a considerable amount of expe- mental data from both 'conventional' kinetics and from such untraditional areas as low-temperature, strongly exothermic, and biological processes. Particular attention is here given to those systems for which a classical description is inadequate, and which provide a diagnostic distinction between several alternative theoretical approaches.

Hydrogen bonds represent type of molecular interaction that determines the structure and function of a large variety of molecular systems. The elementary dynamics of hydrogen bonds and related proton transfer reactions, both occurring in the ultra fast time domain between 10-14 and 10-11s, form a research topic of high current interest. In this book addressing scientists and graduate students in physics, chemistry and biology, the ultra fast dynamics of hydrogen bonds and proton transfer in the condensed phase are reviewed by leading scientists, documenting the state of the art in this exciting field from the viewpoint of theory and experiment. The nonequilibrium behavior of hydrogen-bonded liquids and intramolecular hydrogen bonds as well as photo induced hydrogen and proton transfer are covered in 7 chapters, making reference to the most recent literature.
