Seit 1974 haben sich in fast einem Drittel aller Staaten der Erde Veränderungen des politischen Systems vollzogen, wobei in erster Linie unterschiedliche Typen von demokratischen Regierungssystemen entstanden sind. Seit 1989 waren zahlreiche Übergänge kommunistischer Einparteisysteme zu Repräsentativsystemen zu beobachten. Diese Systemtransformationen fordern die Politikwissenschaft dazu heraus, Methoden und Vorgehensweisen zu entwickeln, mit deren Hilfe solche Vorgänge erfaßt und in ihrem Ablauf erklärt werden können. Die Studie "Transformation in Ungarn und der DDR - eine vergleichende Analyse" von Christof Ehrhart stellt auf der Grundlage eines systematischen Vergleichs der Geschehnisse in Ungarn und der DDR einen Zusammenhang zwischen den spezifischen Ursachen der Transformation und deren Verlauf her. In der politikwissenschaftlichen Forschungspraxis werden Transformationen bisher weniger als Chance denn als Herausforderung wahrgenommen. Trotz des Aufkommens neuer Erklärungsansätze, die anstelle der Makro-Ebene des politischen Systems die Mikro-Ebene der Akteure oder die Meso-Ebene der Institutionen in den Mittelpunkt der Analyse rücken, steht die Disziplin noch am Beginn einer theoriegestützten Beschäftigung mit den Phänomenen des Systemwandels und Systemwechsels in kommunistischen Einparteisystemen. Christof Ehrhart unternimmt vor diesem Hintergrund eine Expedition in das weitgehend unerforschte Gebiet der Desiderata der Transformationsforschung. Dabei steht im Kern die Suche nach jenen Faktoren, die den Verlauf und die Dynamik von Systemtransformationen im allgemeinen und von kommunistischen Einparteisystemen im besonderen bestimmen. Die Untersuchung von Christof Ehrhart besticht durch den souveränen Umgang mit Forschungstraditionen, Theorien und Methoden auf der einen sowie auf den historisch-politischen Fakten auf der anderen Seite. It was in Europe that the Cold War reached a decisive turning point in the 1960s, leading to the era of détente. The Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe (CSCE), with its Final Act in Helsinki in August 1975, led to a rapprochement between East and West in the fields of security, economy and culture. This volume offers a pilot study in what the authors perceive as the key issues within this process: an understanding over the ‘German problem’ (balancing the recognition of the post-war territorial status quo against a formula for the eventuality of a peaceful change of frontiers) and the Western strategy of transformation through a multiplication of contacts between the two blocs. Both of these arguments emerged from the findings of an international research project on ‘Détente and CSCE in Europe, 1966-1975’, funded by the Volkswagen Stiftung and headed by the two editors.

Urn einen Einblick in die Entwicklung der sozialwissenschaftlichen Forschung zur DDR seit 1991 zu geben, werden in einern Dokumentationsteil zwei Recherchen aus den Datenbanken des Informati onszentrums Sozialwissenschaften abgebildet. Mehr als 700 Forschungsprojekte, die von 1991 bis 1997 Eingang in die Datenbank FORIS gefunden haben, zeigen die Breite der Thernenstellungen und Me thoden der gegenwartigen deutschspraehigen DDR-Forschung. Titel, Autoren, Institutionen, Laufzeit und Art der Projekte beschreiben die Vorhaben. Saeh- und Autorenregister erschliefien die lnhalte und ihre Bearbeiter. Die zweite Recherche stammt aus der Literaturdatenbank SOLIS und gibt Auskunft fiber Literatur, die zwischen 1991 und 1997 zum Thema "Sozialwissenschaften und Wissenschaftssy stem der DDR" im deutschen Sprachrawn erschienen ist. Diese bibliographische Zusammenstellung ermoglicht dern Nutzer, die Auseinandersetzung wn die DDR-Sozialwissenschaften und ihren Stellen 3 wert im Wissenschaftssystem der DDR naehzuvollziehen . Sach- und Autorenregister erleiehtem den Zugang zu den rund 300 Literaturhinweisen. Die hier vorgestellte Bestandssicherungstatigkeit der GESIS kann Dieht hoch genug veranschlagt werden, denn die Forschung, die durch sie ermoglieht wird, ist Dieht nur fur unser Land bedeutsam.
