Natural and constructed wetlands play a very important role within the landscape and their ecological services are highly valuable. Water management, including flood water retention, biomass production, carbon sequestration, wastewater treatment and as a biodiversity source are among the most important ecological services of wetlands. In order to provide these services, wetlands need to be properly evaluated, protected and maintained. This book provides results of the latest research in wetland science around the world. Chapters deal with such topics as the use of constructed wetlands for treatment of various types of wastewater, use of constructed wetlands in agroforestry, wetland hydrology and evapotranspiration, the effect of wetlands on landscape temperature, and chemical properties of wetland soils.

This manual discusses the capabilities of constructed wetlands, a functional design approach, and the management requirements to achieve the designed purpose. The manual also attempts to put the proper perspective on the appropriate use, design and performance of constructed wetlands. For some applications, they are an excellent option because they are low in cost and in maintenance requirements, offer good performance, and provide a natural appearance, if not more beneficial ecological benefits. In other applications, such as large urban areas with large wastewater flows, they may not be at all appropriate owing to their land requirements. Constructed wetlands are especially well suited for wastewater treatment in small communities where inexpensive land is available and skilled operators hard to find and keep. Primary customers will be engineers who service small communities, state regulators, and planning professionals. Secondary users will be environmental groups and the academics.

Environmental engineering protects the conditions of a safe environment, its role being crucial in eliminating ecological threats. It has an interdisciplinary character, utilising principles from biology, chemistry, biochemistry and physics to neutralize pollutants in all facets of the environment. Environmental engineering deals with a wide range of technical and technological problems, including the design and maintenance of water supply, sewage disposal, heating, ventilation and air-conditioning in buildings. This proceedings aims to assess the state of scientific research in various areas of environmental engineering; to evaluate organizational, technical and technological progress in contributing to ecological security; and to determine the place of environmental engineering in sustainable development, taking into account current political and economic conditions. Environmental Engineering is an invaluable source of information and ideas for the international environment engineering scientific community.

This volume resulted from the workshop entitled "Nutrient Cycling and Retention in Natural and Constructed Wetlands IV" which was held at Trebon, Czech Republic, on September 26 to 29, 2001. This time we selected the title "Wetlands -- Nutrients, Metals and Mass Cycling" in order to avoid confusion with the previous proceedings which resulted from the workshop of the same title (Nutrient Cycling and Retention in Natural and Constructed Wetlands", Backhuys Publishers, 1999 and "Trans-for-mations of Nutrients in Natural and Constructed Wetlands", Backhuys Publishers, 2001). Another factor which influenced the title of this book is the fact that despite keeping the workshop title, other topics have been discussed in the workshop recently. These topics include, for example, heavy metals retention, removal and compartmentalization, reed beds for sludge dewatering, the influence of watershed management on mass cycling or the use of GIS for wetland evaluation. The workshop was planned, similar to three preceding workshops in 1995, 1997 and 1999 to provide an opportunity for scientists working on functioning constructed wetlands for wastewater treatment to meet scientists studying processes occurring in natural wetland ecosystems. The idea of bringing both groups of scientists together proved again to be very useful and we believe that both groups benefited from the exchange of experience. The workshop was organized by Jan Vymazal (Prague) and Jan Pokorn (Institute of Botany, Czech Academy of Sciences and ENKI o.p.s., Trebon) and was supported by grant MSM 000020001 "Solar Energetics of Natural and Tech-no-lo-gi-cal Systems" from the Ministry of Education and Youth of the Czech Republic. The workshop was attended by participants from 13 countries from Europe, Australia, Asia and North and South Americas. This book includes 21 refereed contributions out of 30 papers which were presented during the seminar. All papers also include discussion taped after each presentation and then "recovered" by the editor.
