El concepto de transición es necesariamente confuso, porque siempre resulta difícil delimitar cuál es el punto de partida de cualquier proceso de cambio político, económico o cultural en la sociedad, así como si es meramente coyuntural o afecta al conjunto de la estructura de un país. En consecuencia, la delimitación del origen y término de cualquier proceso será siempre convencional y relativa. Para el conjunto de las ciencias sociales, los procesos de cambio político han tenido siempre un considerable interés, pues permiten entender mejor las sociedades modernas y actuar en consecuencia en su seno. Este libro, que gira en torno al concepto de transición, es fruto de las ponencias y comunicaciones presentadas en el Congreso Internacional sobre Transiciones que se celebró del 7 al 9 de mayo de 2014 en la Universitat Rovira i Virgili de Tarragona. En él se estudiaron los procesos de transición y transformación en el mundo contemporáneo y la serie de conflictos que suscitan en los más diversos ámbitos desde una perspectiva abiertamente pluridisciplinar.

Con el lema «el pueblo quiere la caída del régimen» se inició en diciembre de 2010 la ola de revueltas más importante en el mundo árabe de las últimas décadas, con enormes consecuencias hasta la actualidad en la política internacional. Se comenzó a hablar incluso de una quinta ola democratizadora siguiendo el concepto acuñado por Huntington. Sin embargo, estas afirmaciones pecaron de excesivo optimismo pues, a pesar de que cayeron diversos presidentes, casi todos los regímenes consiguieron sobrevivir. Tanto es así que de entre todas las revueltas que tuvieron lugar tan solo Túnez, el país donde comenzó la Primavera Árabe el 17 de diciembre de 2010, ha llevado a cabo un proceso transicional hacia la democracia. Este libro, resultado de un intenso esfuerzo investigador, no supone sin embargo un análisis en profundidad de los cambios políticos de la Primavera Árabe en la totalidad de los países de la región, sino que se centra en tres casos paradigmáticos que sirven para explicar los tres posibles desenlaces principales, exceptuando el de la guerra civil: Túnez, Egipto y Jordania. Con ello, el objetivo principal del análisis es dar respuesta a qué es lo que realmente ha pasado en estos países en los últimos años y qué variables ayudan a explicar los hechos acontecidos.
