Heterogeneously catalyzed selective oxidations of alcohols is a highly topical field. The first chapter of this brief describes the importance of the selective oxidation of alcohols and advantages of heterogeneous catalysts over conventional catalysts, use of environmentally benign oxidants, and the design of selective catalysts by tailoring of polyoxometalates at the molecular level. Chemical copper-catalyzed aerobic oxidation reactions exhibit complexities not present in similar oxidation reactions employing noble metal catalysts with traditional chemical oxidants like hypervalent iodines or peroxides. The oxidation of organic molecules involves the removal of two protons and two electrons. This inevitably requires two CuII catalyst molecules to participate in the net oxidation reaction due to the one-electron redox-state changes typically associated with Cu. Additionally, CuI must react with molecular oxygen, a ground-state triplet molecule and net four-electron oxidant, to regenerate the active CuII catalyst. Aspects of these complexities are addressed in this thesis. Nature has evolved to use Cu catalysts (often together with redox-active organic cocatalysts) to perform oxidation reactions that use O2 as the terminal oxidant. The oxidation of CuI by O2 has been the subject of extensive investigation over the past several decades, and many of these studies were inspired by enzyme active sites in biological systems. Biological systems have also revealed pathways whereby CuII can oxidize organic substrates, and several chemical Cu-based catalyst systems exhibit intriguing similarities to enzymatic active sites. Herein, studies of several chemical copper-catalyzed aerobic oxidation reactions are reported, and, in many cases, the reactivity is compared to closely related enzymatic reactions. Chapter 1 summarizes challenges, opportunities, and progress made by our research group toward achieving selective and efficient Cu-catalyzed aerobic oxidation reactions. Chapter 2 describes a mechanistic study of aerobic alcohol oxidation catalyzed by Cu together with redox-active organic azodicarboxylates. Chapter 3 explains how Cu produces a redox-active organic nitroxyl cocatalyst under catalytic conditions from a simple diamine precursor. Chapter 4 details the investigation of single-electron transfer from phenol substrates to CuII.

Transition metal oxide-based systems as catalysts for oxidative reactions are studied. Utilizing aerobic oxygen as a cost-efficient and benign oxidant is explored for alcohol oxidation reactions. A detailed magnetic study is performed to understand the active phases of manganese oxide catalysts. The role of a well-known homogeneous copper oxide catalyst in an oxidation reaction is explored for making alcohols from aliphatic hydrocarbons. Finally, virtual screening techniques are explored in a preliminary study for materials discovery. In chapter I, aerobic transformation of alcohols is studied by mesoporous manganese oxide and cobalt oxide species. Catalyst optimization, characterization and substrate scope experimentation is performed for self-esterification of alcohols and aldehydes. In chapter II, a comprehensive magnetic characterization of mesoporous manganese oxide species is provided. While conventional methods do not lead to definitive phase determination, magnetic transitions and spin eco NMR techniques prove the mixed phase of meso MnOx materials. In chapter III, a synthetic copper complex is studied. The complex was modeled after the active site of particulate methane monooxygenase (pMMO). A detailed study of the complex structure, reaction medium and by- products showed that an important side reaction interfered with hydrocarbon oxidation. The nitrile solvent decomposes to amide by nucleophilic interactions from hydrogen peroxide. In the final chapter, preliminary computational screening tools are introduced. Extraction of geometrical features of molecular structures and evaluation of total energy with machine learning algorithms are performed and the ground work for application of such work to crystalline materials is proposed.

Transformation of hydrocarbon feedstocks to complex molecules found in the fine chemical, agro chemical, and pharmaceutical industries require selective oxidations to impart the desired functionality. Oxidation of alcohols is commonly done employing harsh and potentially hazardous oxidants with stoichiometric amounts of byproducts being produced. The use of O2 as the terminal oxidant provides a safe and environmentally benign alternative with selectivity control being realized through the use of a catalyst. The use of a Ru(OH)x/Al2O3 catalyst for the oxidation of alcohols to aldehydes or ketones was studied for applicability and scalability in a continuous process. The catalyst was found to undergo rapid deactivation in the first 50-100 turnovers. High yields of diverse aldehydes and ketones were realized in the continuous process over the deactivated Ru(OH)x/Al2O3 catalyst. The discovery of a new heterogeneous catalyst was accomplished through rapid admixture screening and optimization using design of experiment techniques. The optimized catalyst compositions of PdBi0.47Te0.09/C (PBT-1) and PdBi0.35Te0.23/C (PBT-2) were found to be very active and selective for the aerobic oxidation of 1-octanol to methyl octanoate. These optimized catalysts show high yields of many diverse methyl esters from the oxidation of alcohols, and their stability was demonstrated in a continuous process achieving nearly 60,000 turnovers with no apparent loss in activity. The role of the Bi and Te promoters and mechanism of the PBT-2 catalyst was explored through kinetic studies and characterization of the catalyst. Through the use of kinetics and other mechanistic probes we discovered that the reaction shows saturation dependence in [substrate] and [K2CO3] and is first order in pO2, supporting a Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanism with the reaction occurring between alkoxide and O2 adsorbed to the catalyst. The promoters are proposed to protect the Pd catalyst from over oxidation to inactive PdOx species as well as prevent side reactions (Bi) and electronically modify the Pd (Te). Oxidation of alcohols to aldehydes or nitriles was demonstrated in a continuous process using a CuI/TEMPO catalyst. The oxidation to the nitrile was accomplished through the addition of anhydrous ammonia, and excellent yields were observed from the oxidation of diverse primary benzylic alcohols.
