This volume considers how the act through which historians interpret the past can be understood as one of epistemological and cognitive translation. The book convincingly argues that words, images, and historical and archaeological remains can all be considered as objects deserving the same treatment on the part of historians, whose task consists exactly in translating their past meanings into present language. It goes on to examine the notion that this act of translation is also an act of synchronization which connects past, present, and future, disrupting and resetting time, as well as creating complex temporalities differing from any linear chronology. Using a broad, deep interpretation of translation, History as a Translation of the Past brings together an international cast of scholars working on different periods to show how their respective approaches can help us to better understand and translate the past in the future.

This diploma thesis titled "Translating the Past Perfect in The Remains of the Day" deals with the question of the relationship between the English past perfect tense and the Slovenian pluperfect. After establishing a theoretical basis of the English past perfect and the Slovenian pluperfect, the thesis focuses on how the past perfect is translated into Slovenian. We have identified all the examples of the past perfect in Kazuo Ishiguro's The Remains of the Day, and classified them in terms of aspect (indefinite and progressive) and voice (passive and active), and identified their corresponding forms in the Slovenian translation Ostanki dneva, translated by Srečko Fišer. The second step was identifying all the remaining examples of the pluperfect (i.e. not the result of translating the past perfect) and finding their counterparts in the English text. The final part of the thesis provides a summary of our observations and attempts to draw relevant conclusions.

In 1409 Laurent de Premierfait produced a French translation of Giovanni Boccaccio s "De casibus virorum illustrium," a fourteenth-century text containing cautionary historical tales that exemplify the corrupting effects of power. Richly illustrated copies of the translation, known as "Des cas des nobles hommes et femmes," became enormously popular, allowing for a consideration not only of how Boccaccio s Latin made its way into Laurent s French but also how the text was converted into visual images. In "Translating the Past," art historian Anne D. Hedeman traces the history of Laurent s work from the first copies made for the dukes of Berry and Burgundy to manuscripts independently produced by artists and booksellers in Paris. In certain cases, masterpieces resulted, such as the copy owned by the J. Paul Getty Museum, which was painted around 1415 by the Boucicaut Master under King Charles VII of France."

This volume is devoted to the translation of Arabic tenses into English, and English tenses into Arabic. Using a corpus of 1,605 examples, it is remarkably exhaustive in its treatment of the categories and forms of both Standard Arabic and English tenses. As such, it represents a useful reference for translators and linguistics researchers. With 260 example sentences and their translations, the book will be very beneficial to teachers and students of Arabic-English and English-Arabic translation. The book is divided into eight chapters. The first presents the variety of Arabic that will be studied and explains why translation should be a text-oriented process. Chapter Two deals with the differences between tense and aspect in Arabic and English, respectively. Chapter Three proposes a model for translating Standard Arabic perfect verbs into English based on their contextual references. The fourth chapter shows the contextual clues that can assist a translator in selecting the proper English equivalents of Arabic imperfect verbs. Chapter Five deals with the translation of Arabic active participles into English. Translating Arabic passive participles into English is handled in Chapter Six. The seventh chapter tackles the translation of English simple and progressive tenses into Arabic. Chapter Eight provides an approach to the translation of English perfect and perfect progressive tenses into Standard Arabic.

Hong Kong is a cosmopolitan city where international communication is a fact of everyday life. Translation has thus always been essential in bridging the social and cultural gap between Chinese and Western civilizations. Translation in Hong Kong: Past, Present and Future tries to assess the role played by this academic discipline at different historical periods and to articulate the issues that confront its future development. This is one of the most complete if not the best coverage on the subject, written by notable scholars and practitioners in the field.

Uncover the spiritual strength of your family story. We all have a desire to learn more about where we’ve come from, and technology has made this more possible than ever. But our family stories are more than a list of DNA results on a piece of paper or a bunch of fading Kodachrome images filling old photo albums. In an era often marked by both fragmentation in family and culture and a hunger to discover our genetic roots, our family stories—including the difficult, complex ones—can carry great spiritual strength. The desire to trace, interpret, and pass on our family’s history is embedded in Scripture from beginning to end—there are nine genealogies found in the book of Genesis alone. When we bring together the various threads of our family stories with Scripture’s insights, they can provide the key to decoding our identity and helping us discover our place in family, church, and world. In Translating Your Past, author Michelle Van Loon helps readers uncover how patterns and gaps in family histories, generational trauma, adoption, genetic clues and surprises, spiritual history, and the church help us translate our own pasts and understand why these stories matter. Each chapter includes questions designed for individual reflection or small group discussion, as well as an appendix of helpful tools readers can use to translate their own pasts and create meaning in order to transform their unique family history into living, faith-filled heritage.
