Operazione resistente a una definizione univoca, oscillante com'è tra traduzione e scrittura ex novo e autonoma, lo statuto dell'autore e la natura del testo che ne sortisce e persino il termine autotraduzione sono stati messi variamente in discussione. È fuori dubbio, dunque, la problematicità del tema, così come la sua interdisciplinarità; altrettanto indiscutibili sono, invece, nella geografia e storia dell'autotraduzione: la vastità dei domini, dalla letteratura alla trattatistica di ogni genere; la vitalità fin dall'antico; l'universalità, che chiama in campo le più varie combinazioni linguistiche, dialetti inclusi; oltre, naturalmente, alle escursioni tra forme di comunicazione diverse, linguaggi verbali e non verbali e multimediali. Nel mondo contemporaneo nuovi fattori hanno massicciamente esteso e rivestito di significati inediti le occasioni e le necessità d'uso della lingua degli altri, dando vita a nuove diglossie e nuovi bi(e pluri)linguismi che possono talvolta intersecarsi con l'esperienza della costrizione e della autotraduzione forzata. Si tratta, principalmente, delle esperienze maturate nel mondo della migrazione, a cui la storia dell'autotraduzione guarda attualmente con grande interesse. L'invito lanciato dal CRC LIDIA (Centro di Ricerca Coordinata dell'Ateneo di Milano sulle lingue d’adozione) per una nuova riflessione sull'autotraduzione è stato raccolto dagli autori dei contributi di questo volume, che prende in esame nuovi casi disposti sopra un asse cronologico lungo e variegato, spaziando tra realtà geografiche assai lontane tra loro. Voices From an Empire was first published in 1975. The literature of the various regions of Lusophone Africa has received relatively little critical attention compared with that which has been focused on the work of writers in the English- and French- speaking countries of Africa. With the profound changes which are occurring in the social and political structures of Lusophone Africa, there is particular need for the comprehensive look at Afro-Protuguese literature which this account provides. Professor Hamilton traces the development of this literature in the broad perspective of it social, cultural, and aesthetic context. He discusses the whole of the Afro-Portuguese literary phenomenon, as it occurs on the Cape Verde archipelago, in Guinea-Bissau, on the Guinea Gulf islands of Sao Tome and Principe, in Angola, and in Mozambique. In an introduction he discusses some basic questions about Afro-Protuguese literature, among them, the matter of a definition of this body of writing, the implications of the concept of negritude, the role of Portugal and Brazil in Afro-Portuguese literature, and the social and cultural significance of the dominant literary themes found in the various regions of Lusophone Africa. Because he sees the regionalist movement in Angola as the most significant in terms of a neo-African orientation, he begins the book with an extensive study of the literature of that country. Many examples of afro-Portuguese poetry are given, both in the original language and in the English translation. There is a bibliography, and a map shows the African regions of study.

Mexico in Verse, edited by Stephen Neufeld and Michael Matthews, examines Mexican history through its poetry and music, the spoken and the written word. Focusing on modern Mexico, from 1840 to the 1980s, this volume examines the cultural venues in which people articulated their understanding of the social, political, and economic change they witnessed taking place during times of tremendous upheaval, such as the Mexican-American War, the Porfiriato, and the Mexican Revolution. This volume is an in-depth study of the short poetic cycle of Lygdamus, one of the authors included in Book III of the Corpus Tibullianum. The Introduction analyzes the controversial quaestio Lygdamea (identity and dating of the poet), the relationship between Lygdamus and his beloved, Neaera, the incorporation of his poems into the Corpus Tibullianum, and the manuscript tradition. This is followed by a rigorous critical edition (taking fully into account the earliest editions and conjectures). Finally, there is a detailed and exhaustive line-by-line and word-by-word commentary on each poem, paying particular attention to elegiac terms and motifs. This is the first comprehensive study of the work of Lygdamus, considered as a poet with his own literary identity.

A thoroughly researched and documented study of Catalan literature under the Franco regime, focussed on several key post-Civil War novels and their authors. During the 1950s and 1960s, several key Catalan authors set about rewriting some of their narrative work despite the obstacles to publication in Catalan under the Franco regime. This study describes the social, political and cultural conditions that impelled Salvador Espriu, Xavier Benguerel, Sebastià Juan Arbó and Joan Sales to revise Laia, El testament, Tino Costa and Incerta glòria, concentrating particularly on the linguistic debates and literary trends from the 1950s to the early 1970s. Drawing on a wide range of theoretical perspectives, this book examines the reasons for the rewriting, including censorship and self-censorship, generational and ideological changes within the Catalan literary field, controversies over linguistic purism, the appearance of new literary trends and gender and political issues. It focuses on the (re)construction of a distinctive national identity and the impact of repression, memory, exile and silence on the representation of the war and the post-war periods. This study explores not only how writers or society at large were affected by the dictatorship, but how the armed conflict left its mark on the writing process itself. Jordi Cornellà-Detrell is a Lecturer in Spanish in the School of Modern Languages at Bangor University.
