Operazione resistente a una definizione univoca, oscillante com'è tra traduzione e scrittura ex novo e autonoma, lo statuto dell'autore e la natura del testo che ne sortisce e persino il termine autotraduzione sono stati messi variamente in discussione. È fuori dubbio, dunque, la problematicità del tema, così come la sua interdisciplinarità; altrettanto indiscutibili sono, invece, nella geografia e storia dell'autotraduzione: la vastità dei domini, dalla letteratura alla trattatistica di ogni genere; la vitalità fin dall'antico; l'universalità, che chiama in campo le più varie combinazioni linguistiche, dialetti inclusi; oltre, naturalmente, alle escursioni tra forme di comunicazione diverse, linguaggi verbali e non verbali e multimediali. Nel mondo contemporaneo nuovi fattori hanno massicciamente esteso e rivestito di significati inediti le occasioni e le necessità d'uso della lingua degli altri, dando vita a nuove diglossie e nuovi bi(e pluri)linguismi che possono talvolta intersecarsi con l'esperienza della costrizione e della autotraduzione forzata. Si tratta, principalmente, delle esperienze maturate nel mondo della migrazione, a cui la storia dell'autotraduzione guarda attualmente con grande interesse. L'invito lanciato dal CRC LIDIA (Centro di Ricerca Coordinata dell'Ateneo di Milano sulle lingue d’adozione) per una nuova riflessione sull'autotraduzione è stato raccolto dagli autori dei contributi di questo volume, che prende in esame nuovi casi disposti sopra un asse cronologico lungo e variegato, spaziando tra realtà geografiche assai lontane tra loro. Gabriella Cartago è professore ordinario di Linguistica.

"Birth of an Independent Ireland" is a study of the rise of a distinctly Irish nationalist youth in the early twentieth century, which is analysed by focusing on how and to what extent the parallel advent of dedicated periodicals stimulated it. As Ireland moves through the centenary of commemoration of the War of Independence and the establishment of the Free State, it seems only right to direct our attention to the primary role played by the young in the revolutionary years between 1913 and 1923, when Irish boys and girls actively participated in the life of their country as agents of nation-building. In part, they had been taught how to do so. Although they were never mere recipients who passively absorbed pre-formed systems of values, the young had been mentored by nationalist groups and individuals to become active citizens and the builders of a free, independent Ireland. Multiple actors of nationalist sympathies impacted on their lives through social and cultural activities and cultural production ranging from historical works to popular periodical literature. Regarding the latter, a prominent part was played by Our Boys, Fianna, Young Ireland, and St. Enda’s – periodicals for juveniles that carried out a political and cultural programme by catering for both the delight and instruction of Ireland’s youth. They published creative literary work alongside political and critical commentary on pressing matters, as the imperative of these newly-formed papers was to bring their readers into the public space of politics, so that they would contribute to the nation-building process. Therefore, this volume explores how the periodicals constructed very specific images of Irish girlhood and boyhood that were designed to foster a sense of loyalty to Ireland and the nationalist cause, and how they popularised particular receptions of momentous events in Irish history, such as the First World War and the 1916 Easter Rising, so as to buttress their political agenda.

L’histoire des échanges langagiers, confortée par l’expérience de la communication contemporaine, nous enseigne que les innovations technologiques, et les transformations sociales qui les accompagnent, engendrent de nouveaux genres discursifs qui prennent la place des genres plus anciens. Il n’est pas rare que ces derniers deviennent obsolètes et finissent par disparaître complètement. Qui se souvient encore du minitel français, qui pense à envoyer un télégramme, qui adresse des lettres manuscrites par courrier postal etc.? C’est un double mouvement qui se produit: des formes discursives jusqu’alors inconnues voient le jour et en retour elles contribuent elles-mêmes à accélérer de manière irréversible les mutations technologiques et sociales qui les ont rendues possibles. Dans la situation actuelle la multiplication et la vitesse de diffusion de ces mutations technologiques entraînent l’apparition de nombreux genres discursifs encore inconnus il y a quelques années. Toutes les activités humaines professionnelles et personnelles, collectives et intimes en sont affectées.

Perché i romanzi “parlano” più lingue, invece che un’unica lingua? Che sfide impone il multilinguismo letterario alla traduzione e all’idea di una letteratura nazionale? Lo straniamento linguistico, sebbene a volte censurato o dimenticato, ha sempre fatto parte della storia letteraria, e oggi più che mai in una dimensione di cosiddetta “World Literature”. Molti scrittori dall’antichità fino al Novecento si sono non solo auto-tradotti, ma hanno reinventato, alternato e mescolato le proprie lingue madri, spinti dall’esilio, dalla discriminazione, dalle guerre, o anche solo dal viaggio intellettuale, attraversando i continenti, con esempi come quelli di Joyce o Nabokov, i quali hanno raggiunto, con la loro lingua inquieta, inaspettate latitudini globali. Questo saggio vuole offrire, grazie all’uso di metodologie aggiornate e comparando alcuni casi rilevanti tra le Americhe e l’Europa, una teoria di questi romanzi particolari e universali assieme, diabolicamente intraducibili e utopisticamente babelici. Una teoria per comprendere le zone di contatto e di traduzione delle culture contemporanee, le quali hanno smesso da tempo di parlare una sola lingua e di sventolare una sola bandiera, nelle megalopoli così come nelle frontiere.
