Issu du groupement de recherche « Les entreprises françaises sous l’Occupation », ce volume restitue, en adoptant une approche sectorielle, l’ensemble de l'économie des transports dans la France occupée. Les transports sont considérés ici comme un objet cohérent de réflexion historique, à la fois comme secteur économique qui réunit des artisans et des grandes entreprises nationales, et comme réseaux et services essentiels à une économie à l’échelle du territoire national et de l’Europe en guerre. L’histoire des entreprises inclut, dans une imbrication complexe, les marchés qui leur étaient offerts, mais aussi leurs performances et leurs destins divers alors qu’elles sont soumises à des contraintes qui ont pu compromettre leur survie. On retrouve dans le secteur des transports les axes de réflexion du GDR, avec l’importance des archives des entreprises, des témoignages des employés, le recours à des sources nouvelles et parfois insolites pour approfondir la recherche. La nécessité de comparaisons internationales à l’échelle d’un espace européen recomposé s’impose également. Elle est ici illustrée par des regards sur l’Alsace, la Suisse, l’Allemagne. La dimension temporelle considérée s’étend du premier après-guerre aux années 1960 pour fournir un cadre d’interprétation aux évolutions de la période de guerre, qui dépendent des stratégies des acteurs, d’attentes et de perceptions dépassant la relative courte durée du conflit. Enfin, abordant à plusieurs reprises l’épuration, ces travaux prennent en compte l'évolution de l'image des transports et des entreprises et la perception de leur rôle économique tant pendant l'Occupation qu'après la guerre.
