Il monologo col quale Koji si rivolge all'invalido, come per rimuovere la maledizione che grava su quell'amore, fa precipitare il trio verso il compimento di un delitto che sembra rispondere a un segreto desiderio di espiazione e di morte.Vissuta sullo sfondo di una natura idilliaca, tra le spiagge e le pinete della penisola di Izu, questa storia di un eros appassionato che conduce irragionevolmente alla rovina acquista un'aura di essenzialità e fatalità che è stata paragonata da molti a quella propria della tragedia greca.Mishima indugiò nel comporre il fortissimo epilogo: la notte del capodanno del 1961, a Milano, dopo aver ascoltato il "Fidelio" di Beethoven alla Scala, scrisse di getto l'ultimo capitolo, degno di coronamento di uno dei suoi romanzi più significativi.
