O Brasil, país de dimensões continentais, é reconhecido mundialmente por suas belezas naturais e seu clima tropical. No entanto, esta mesma tropicalidade o torna terreno fértil para as doenças infecciosas e parasitárias, ainda mais se somarmos a isto as grandes dificuldades de educação em saúde e de infraestrutura sanitária que, em pleno século XXI, ainda são realidade no país. Neste cenário, como docente de Parasitologia e orientadora de uma liga acadêmica de Infectologia em um curso médico, costumo justificar aos meus alunos a importância do estudo das doenças infecciosas e parasitárias no contexto brasileiro parafraseando o poeta-cantor: “moramos num país tropical, abençoado por Deus e cheio de doenças infecciosas e parasitárias por natureza”. Ensino-lhes que, enquanto profissionais da saúde, devemos procurar conhecer não apenas os aspectos relacionados às manifestações clínicas, diagnóstico e tratamento destas doenças, mas também, as formas de preveni-las, se ainda não ocorreram, de controlá-las, se já estiverem ocorrendo, e, quem sabe, erradicá-las por completo de uma localidade ou população. Ao evitarmos a ocorrência de doenças infecciosas ou parasitárias, estamos contribuindo para uma melhor qualidade de vida das populações através da redução da morbimortalidade relacionada a estas doenças, o que impacta economicamente e nos sistemas de saúdes. Para tal, as medidas profiláticas devem considerar que, quanto mais informada for a população, maiores serão as chances dos indivíduos contribuírem para a efetividade das ações e, consequentemente, sua eficácia. Assim, a educação em saúde torna-se tão fundamental quanto a implementação de saneamento básico e outras medidas sanitárias para o controle da grande maioria destas doenças. Na perspectiva de proporcionar uma oportunidade para que acadêmicos, pósgraduandos e pesquisadores pudessem apresentar contribuições na temática das doenças infecciosas e parasitárias no contexto brasileiro, surgiu a ideia de produzir esta obra, a qual reúne 70 capítulos, organizados em dois volumes, sobre doenças causadas pelos mais diversos agentes infecciosos, dentre vírus, bactérias, fungos, protozoários e helmintos. Esta obra é publicada em um momento sanitário mundial gravíssimo, quando atravessamos, há mais de um ano, uma pandemia por um novo vírus descrito ao final do ano de 2019 e que, até o presente momento, já causou mais de 3 milhões de óbitos no mundo, estando o Brasil na segunda colocação em número de mortes por este vírus, ora denominado SARS-CoV-2. A doença causada pelo novo coronavírus, – a COVID-19 – trouxe-nos, além de grandes mudanças de hábitos, a certeza de que, cada vez mais é necessário aproximar a ciência das pessoas, mesmo as que não fazem parte do meio acadêmico e científico, pois só o conhecimento é capaz de ajudar a humanidade a compreender que precisamos cuidar uns dos outros e do planeta se não quisermos nos tornar mais uma espécie em extinção por ação de um agente patogênico.
