Forced Migration and Social Trauma addresses the topic of social trauma and migration by bringing together a broad range of interdisciplinary and international contributors, comprising refugee care practitioners, trauma researchers, sociologists and specialists in public policy from all along the Balkan refugee route into Europe. It gives the essence of a moderated dialogue between psychologists and psychoanalysts, sociologists, public policy and refugee care experts. Migration is connected to social trauma and cannot be handled without being aware of this context. The way refugees are treated in the transit or target countries is often determined by the socio-traumatic history of these countries. Social trauma can be collectively committed and perpetuated, leaving transgenerational traces in posttraumatic and attachment disorders, uprootedness and loss of social and political confidence. Media and cultural artefacts like press, TV and the internet influence collective coping as well as traumatic perpetuation. This book shows how xenophobia in the refugee receiving or transit countries can be caused by projection rather than by experience, and that the way refugees are received and regarded in a country may be connected to the country’s cultural‐traumatic history. Refugees, who are often individually and collectively traumatised, experience multiple re-enactments; however, such retraumatisations between refugees and receiving populations or institutions often remain unaddressed. The split between welcoming and hostile attitudes sometimes leads to unconscious institutional defences, such as lack of cooperation between medical, psychotherapeutic, humanitarian and legal institutions. An interdisciplinary and international exchange on migration and social trauma is necessary on all levels – this book gives convincing examples of this dialogue. Forced Migration and Social Trauma will be of great interest to all who are involved in the modern issues of refuge and migration.

In this book, I weave together personal stories of my struggles growing up in an African culture at a time when education for girls was given little consideration, and there were stories of the traumas of surviving a political coup and a violent relocating, with stories of other women who experienced their own pains of relocating. The book offers knowledge and insight to mental health and other professionals who work closely with these women who are involved in the struggle of integrating into new Canadian communities while carrying the baggage of pre- and postmigration trauma. Although my experience is not unique among other immigrant womens stories, it has given me a reason to appreciate each day that God blesses me with life, shelter, freedom from gunshots, and an abundance of resources. I am ever grateful that as immigrants and professional workers read this book, which is an interweaving of the comments of African immigrant women, excerpts from my own personal story, and the insights of others, they will encounter new perspectives about African immigrant women (hereafter AIR women). Specifically, the section of shared stories of pre- and postmigration trauma will shed knowledge on how to begin work with a clientele who come from similar backgrounds. I especially hope that readers will be encouraged to thankfully reflect on their own experiences as people who have the privilege of living in a country that is safe.

This book examines how trauma is experienced and narrated differently across languages and cultures, drawing on rich ethnographic case studies and a novel cognitive-linguistic approach to analyse the variations of English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) used in the narratives of West-African migrants and refugees in the course of intercultural encounters with Italian experts from domain-specific fields of discourse (including legal, medical, religious and cultural professionals). It examines the ways in which such experts interpret the migrants’ trauma narratives by applying discourse conventions from within their communities of practice, as well as their own native linguacultural norms. It argues persuasively for the development of a ‘hybrid ELF mode’ of intercultural communication to be used by experts in charge of unequal encounters in specialized migration contexts that can accommodate different culture-bound categorizations of trauma.
