Der Band analysiert die Bedeutung von Träumen, deren Interpretation bis zum 17. Jahrhundert noch stark in der Kontinuität antiker Vorgaben stand, wie die Editionen klassischer Traumdeutungsbücher in Renaissance und Barock belegen. In einer gesamteuropäischen Perspektive wird dabei deutlich, wie im Verlauf des 17. Jahrhunderts diese aus der Antike reichende Tradition an Relevanz einbüßte, da beispielsweise geträumte Herrschaftslegitimationen, die seit dem Altertum vorwiegend in nächtlich vermittelten Botschaften übermittelt wurden, an Bedeutung verloren. Trotz der überkonfessionellen Verurteilung der Traumkultur als heils- und seelengefährend lässt sich beobachten, dass gerade in Krisenzeiten bedrängte Gläubige von ihrer Erlösung und der ihrer Kirche träumten. Gleichzeitig ist jene wachsende Individualisierungstendenz der Traumkultur zu konstatieren, wie sie sich in der Aufklärung ausformte und wie sie uns heute vertraut ist.

Conceptions of Dreaming from Homer to 1800 traces the history of ideas about dreaming during the period when the admonitory dream was the main focus of learned interest—from the Homeric epics through the Renaissance—and the period when it began to become a secondary focus—the eighteenth century. The book also considers the two most important dream theorists at the turn of the twentieth century, Sigmund Freud and Sante de Sanctis. While Freud is concerned with questions of what a dream means and how to interpret it, de Sanctis offers a synthesis of nineteenth-century research into what a dream is and represents the Enlightenment transition from particular facts to general laws.

This volume considers the influential revival of ancient philosophical skepticism in the 16th and early 17th centuries and investigates, from a comparative perspective, its reception in early modern English, Spanish and French drama, dedicating detailed readings to plays by Shakespeare, Calderón, Lope de Vega, Rotrou, Desfontaines, and Cervantes. While all the plays employ similar dramatic devices for "putting skepticism on stage", the study explores how these dramas, however, give different "answers" to the challenges posed by skepticism in relation to their respective historico-cultural and "ideological" contexts.
