After 9/11, the world felt the “shock and awe” of the War on Terror. But that war also exploded inside novels, films, comics, and gaming. Danel Olson investigates why the paranormal, ghostly, and conspiratorial entered such media between 2002-2022, and how this Gothic presence connects to the most recent theories on PTSD. Set in New York/Gotham, Afghanistan, Iraq, and CIA black sites, the traumatic and weird works interrogated here ask how killing affects the killers. The protagonists probed are artillery, infantry, and armored-cavalry soldiers; military intelligence; the Air Force; counter-terrorism officers of the NYPD, NCIS, FBI, and CIA; and even the ultimate crime-fighting vigilante, Batman.

A Trauma Theory Reading Of The Book Of Job written by Michelle Keener and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-06-12 with Religion categories.
Michelle Keener incorporates advances in modern trauma theory in the interpretation of the book of Job. Keener focuses primarily on using the framework of a psychological trauma narrative to read the text, providing new insights into how Job functions as a text that deals with trauma. After an extensive introduction to the history and fundamentals of trauma theory Keener actively applies a trauma theory reading to the book of Job with special attention paid to the elements of a therapeutic trauma narrative, its role in the cognitive resolution of trauma, and how this is reflected in the biblical text. This approach provides alternative answers to some of the suggested redactions, reconstruction, and inconsistencies identified in the text of Job by previous scholars. Keener also draws in the Wesleylan Quadrilateral as a means of reading the texts, and examines how her conclusions may be useful in applied community contexts.

W G Sebald S Hybrid Poetics written by Lynn L. Wolff and has been published by Walter de Gruyter this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-04-02 with Literary Criticism categories.
This book offers a new critical perspective on the perpetual problem of literature's relationship to reality and in particular on the sustained tension between literature and historiography. The scholarly and literary works of W.G. Sebald (1944–2001) serve as striking examples for this discussion, for the way in which they demonstrate the emergence of a new hybrid discourse of literature as historiography. This book critically reconsiders the claims and aims of historiography by re-evaluating core questions of the literary discourse and by assessing the ethical imperative of literature in the 20th and 21st centuries. Guided by an inherently interdisciplinary framework, this book elucidates the interplay of epistemological, aesthetic, and ethical concerns that define Sebald's criticism and fiction. Appropriate to the way in which Sebald's works challenge us to rethink the boundaries between discourses, genres, disciplines, and media, this work proceeds in a methodologically non-dogmatic way, drawing on hermeneutics, semiotics, narratology, and discourse theory. In addition to contextualizing Sebald within postwar literature in German, the book is the first English-language study to consider Sebald's œuvre as a whole. Of interest for Sebald experts and enthusiasts, literary scholars and historians concerned with the problematic of representing the past.

The past several decades have seen an explosion of interest in narrative, with this multifaceted object of inquiry becoming a central concern in a wide range of disciplinary fields and research contexts. As accounts of what happened to particular people in particular circumstances and with specific consequences, stories have come to be viewed as a basic human strategy for coming to terms with time, process, and change. However, the very predominance of narrative as a focus of interest across multiple disciplines makes it imperative for scholars, teachers, and students to have access to a comprehensive reference resource.

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder In Shakespeare written by Kelsey Ridge and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-07-18 with Literary Criticism categories.
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder in Shakespeare combines literary criticism, performance studies, psychiatric literature, trauma studies, and disability studies to examine the presentation of PTSD in Shakespeare’s plays. This volume takes as case studies 1 Henry IV, Othello, Macbeth, Much Ado About Nothing, and Troilus and Cressida. This character-based, interdisciplinary approach places Shakespeare’s texts and their production histories in conversation with current scientific research by blending literary analysis, medical and psychosocial research, memoirs and patient accounts, and performance history. This research deepens our understanding of representations of trauma in early modern literature and reveals what the artistic representations of trauma and PTSD in the early modern period can tell us about the history of this condition. It reminds us that people lived with PTSD long before the APA codified the condition in the 1980s; it places this condition in a longer historical continuity. With this knowledge, we can better consider the role Shakespeare can play in how we respond to trauma and psychological injury now.

Since the turn of the millennium, there has seen an increase in the inclusion of typography, graphics and illustration in fiction. Danielewski and Jonathan Safran Foer alongside experimental fringe writers such as Steve Tomasula, to uncover an embodied textual aesthetics in the information age. Bringing together multimodality and cognition in an innovative study of how readers engage with challenging literature, this book makes a significant contribution to the debates surrounding multimodal design and multimodal reading. Drawing on cognitive linguistics, cognitive psychology, neuroscience, semiotics, visual perception, visual communication, and multimodal analysis, Gibbons provides a sophisticated set of critical tools for analysing the cognitive impact of multimodal literature.

Theoretically Speaking About Literature written by David Owen and has been published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-12-09 with Literary Criticism categories.
Literary theory has become such a central part of the study of literature, particularly at university level, that a solid familiarity with its basic ideas is now essential. This book will appeal to students who may find the many theoretical approaches that they encounter to be complex, highly demanding, and difficult to incorporate into their own work, and will also be of interest to teachers who are trying to guide their students towards a clear and constructive understanding of this ambit. Through focus on a single study text, discussed from the perspective of eighteen distinct theories that are presented and explained in a consistent manner throughout, readers are given a practical and comprehensible insight into the ideas and beliefs that underpin critical interpretation.
