Die Erforschung der Traumkulturen hat in den letzten Jahren an Dynamik gewonnen. Ausgehend von Freud werden dabei vorrangig Traumdarstellungen in der modernen Literatur in den Blick genommen. Wie aber steht es um das Wissen und die Poetik des Traumes in der Literatur der Vormoderne? Die vorliegenden Beiträge gehen dieser Frage nach und decken dabei einen Zeitraum ab, der von Dante bis Descartes reicht. Während die Traumvision im Spätmittelalter als Mittler zwischen Diesseits und Jenseits dient, lockert sich diese Verknüpfung in der Renaissancelyrik zugunsten pluraler Funktionen. Die Pforten des Traumes öffnen sich zum einen für heterotope Welten, und zum anderen rückt der Traum selbst als Medium in den Mittelpunkt der Darstellung. Nicht zuletzt dient er als Vehikel für politische Allegorien. Research in dream cultures has been gaining a certain dynamic over the past years. Starting from Freud's premises, the focus has primarily been on dream representations in modern literature. However, what about the knowledge and poetics of dreams in writings from the premodern era? The present contributions pursue this question, covering a period extending from Dante to Descartes. While dream visions serve as a mediator between earthly existence and the beyond during the late Middle Ages, this nexus slackens in Renaissance poetry as they assume multiple functions. On the one hand, the gates of dreams are opened up for heterotopic worlds; on the other, dreams become the centre of representation as a medium in its own right. Lastly, and importantly, dreams serve as a vehicle for political allegories.

This volume explores the dream cultures of the European long sixteenth century, with a focus on Italian sources, reflections and debates on the nature and value of dreams, and frameworks of interpretation. The chapters examine a variety of oneiric experiences, since distinctions such as that between dreams and visions are themselves culturally specific and variable. Several developments of the period are relevant and consequently considered, from the introduction of the printing press and the humanist rediscovery of ancient texts to the religious reforms and the cultural encounters at the time of the first globalisation. At the centre of the narrative is the exceptional case of Girolamo Cardano, heterodox physician, mathematician, astrologer, autobiographer, dreamer and key dream theorist of the epoch. The Italian peninsula produced the first printed editions of many classical and medieval treatises, and, particularly between the 1560s and the 1610s, was also especially active in the writing of texts, both Latin and vernacular, fascinated by the oneiric experience and investigating it. Given the role of the visual in dreaming, images are also analysed. This book will be a recommended reading for scholars, students and non-specialist readers of cultural history, Renaissance studies and dream cultures.

Kaiserreichs vollzieht sich in Frankreich nicht nur ein politischer sondern auch ein diskursgeschichtlicher Wandel, in dessen Folge ein Dispositiv der Erkrankung und des Niederganges durch solche Formationen überschrieben wird, die nunmehr Heil statt Unheil setzen. Der negative Vitalismus der Dekadenz weicht einer Regenerationsbewegung, die sich jedoch nicht in einem einzigen politischen Diskurs beruhigen kann, sondern sich um jene mit dem Verlust des Souveräns entstandene Leerstelle herum zu vervielfältigen scheint. Steht die Dekadenz im Zeichen einer gleichermaßen fetischisierten wie perhorreszierten Weiblichkeit, so kreist die mit der Niederlage von Sedan aufkommende Regenerationsdynamik um eine Vaterfunktion, die in der Republik, so scheint es, eben gerade noch keine symbolische Entsprechung finden kann. Die vakante Vaterposition wird damit offen für immer neue, imaginäre Besetzungen, die bei aller Heterogenität als Gemeinsamkeit die Verschränkung von Männlichkeit und Heil teilen.

Raffaello Borghini's Il Riposo (1584) is the most widely known Florentine document on the subject of the Counter-Reformation content of religious paintings. Despite its reputation as an art-historical text, this is the first English-language translation of Il Riposo to be published. A distillation of the art gossip that was a feature of the Medici Grand Ducal court, Borghini's treatise puts forth simple criteria for judging the quality of a work of art. Published sixteen years after the second edition of Giorgio Vasari's Vite, the text that set the standard for art-historical writing during the period, Il Riposo focuses on important issues that Vasari avoided, ignored, or was oblivious to. The New Testament shows the early Church as having both stable institutions and dynamic growth in charismatic ministries. In the twenty-first century, although many historically-determined inessentials have changed, the Church’s structure remains fundamentally the same. This study looks at New Testament ministries (Eph 4:11-12), Baptism in the Holy Spirit, and the history of the gift of tongues from the Acts of the Apostles through to the charismatics of our time, to see how these elements contribute to the fast-paced, global phenomenon we call the “pentecostalization” of modern Christianity. Our research shows that much of what appears to be novel in current ecclesial movements is the fruit of charisms that have been poured out from the beginning. The disciples of Christ are still bringing “out of his treasure what is new and old.”
