Even for an experienced traveler like Charlie, Cuba is a place unlike any he has visited before -- an island full of surprises, secrets and puzzling contradictions. When Charlie's artist mother is invited to visit a school in Cuba, the whole family goes along on the trip. But the island they discover is a far cry from the all-inclusive resorts that Charlie has heard his friends talk about. Charlie has never visited a country as strange and puzzling as Cuba -- a country where he often feels like a time traveler. Where Havana's grand Hotel Nacional sits next to buildings that seem to be crumbling before his very eyes. Where the streets are filled with empty storefronts and packs of wild dogs, but where flowers and sherbet-colored houses may lie around the next corner, and music is everywhere. Where there are many different kinds of walls -- from Havana's famous sea wall to the invisible ones that seem aimed at keeping tourists and locals apart. Then the family heads "off the beaten track," traveling by hot, dusty bus to Viñales, where Charlie makes friends with Lázaro, who often flies from Miami to visit his Cuban relatives. The boys ride a horse bareback, find a secret cache of rifles inside a little green mountain and go swimming with small albino fish in an underground cave. A rent-a-wreck takes the family into the countryside, where they find an abandoned hotel inhabited by goats, and a modern resort filled with tourists. And as he goes from one strange and marvelous escapade to another, Charlie finds that his expectations about a place and its people are overturned again and again.

Joseph J. Dimock's descriptions of Cuba in his travel diary provide a remarkable firsthand view of a fascinating period in the island's history. In the mid-nineteenth century, the United States was pursuing manifest destiny. The war with Mexico had resulted in a vast increase of national territory, and many north Americans wanted Cuba as the next acquisition. In addition to annexationist plots, Cuban life was marked by slave conspiracies, colonial insurrections, economic expansion, and political intrigue. Impressions of Cuba in the Nineteenth Century describes the social, economic and political conditions in the 1850s. Dimock's entries of his travels and observations as an American reveal details of Cuban agriculture, plant life, and natural resources. The diary also provides elaborate accounts of the sugar industry, extensive commentary on the daily live of slaves, Spaniards, and Cubans. Dimock's curiosity led him around the island, into prisons, salons, and other unusual places, resulting in a wide-ranging account of Cuban life. Impressions of Cuba in the Nineteenth Century provides a highly accessible, entertaining, and insightful look at Cuba.

The Best and Most Unique Cuba Travel Guide Cuba is the largest island in the Caribbean and home to about 11 million Cubans. This is a truly unique place, which most of you know because of our famous history and infamous regime. However, Cuba is so much more than what makes it to the media or in the press. Contrary to popular belief, it's a very welcoming place and tourists are always made to feel at home, or as a very important guest of our little island. Cuba has developed at a different pace than any other country in the world. Life on the island is filled with rhythms of music, charismatic people, a unique culture, idyllic countryside and tropical beaches. Cuba never ceases to amaze tourists and locals alike, with its fading colonial architecture, classic cars, and delicious food and flavorful rum. When you walk the streets of Cuba you will notice an appreciation for art and culture like nowhere else in the world. Conversely, the countryside is home to unspoiled nature that dazzles you with its diversity of flora and fauna. You will surprised to find a different Cuba these days due to a number of factors that are slowly awakening Cuba from its long hibernation in the socialist regime that it endured for a long period of time. First of all, the Soviet Union collapsed in 1990, which sent Cuba in a financial crisis, and then Fidel Castro, becoming too old to run the country handed it over to his brother, Raul. The differences in the style of governing didn't take too long to appear. The Cuban people enjoy more freedom everyday. There is an unprecedented increase in the private sector with more and more Cubans allowed to venture into owning and operating their own businesses. This is also reflected in the provincial areas and the bureaucracy seems to become less troubling for travelers, who are getting access to private businesses with the mission of making the process effortless. The recent talks about lifting the embargo and improving the US-Cuba relationships is a step forward but it's still illegal for Americans to visit Cuba. Not because we don't allow it. It's the US Government that fines its citizens for visiting this country. We'll talk about the visa aspects in a future chapter. Let this book guide you to the many places that you must see in Cuba to make this trip a life changing event. This book is filled with suggested places to stay, from budget to luxurious, places to visit, local cuisines to try, and places to shop. All these suggested itineraries have been experienced first-hand and are all highly recommended to tourists. Experience a whole new world when you come and visit Cuba.
