Very Special Agents written by James Moore and has been published by University of Illinois Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-08-15 with Political Science categories.

When James Moore joined the ATF in 1960, it was an arm of the Internal Revenue Service with one job: to catch the Mafia bootleggers whose distilleries cheated Uncle Sam of millions in tax revenue. During his twenty-five years of service, Moore saw the organization shift to enforcing of gun laws, be reborn as a separate bureau, and take on bombings and arson cases that most law officers wrote off as impossible to solve. Moore's personal, from-the-hip history spans the long-running war against dons and drug dealers and covers agents' daring infiltration of the Ku Klux Klan, Hell's Angels, and other violent groups. He reveals the cutting-edge forensics work that helped crack the World Trade Center and Oklahoma City bombings and also provides an insider account of the raid on the Branch Davidians at Waco. Finally, Moore discusses the ATF's rivalry with the FBI and the political power games that impede the government's ability to fight crime.

This volume of The Dark Corners is not unlike the previous three. As with the others, you will find information here not found anywhere else. This volume is slightly different though, with much attention given to what I consider leftovers and loose ends. I have also addressed some additional aspects of the Lindbergh kidnapping in which many have expressed interest. This includes a chapter on the “spy” Jacob Nosovitsky and one on Violet Sharp, a topic that I have avoided—until now.

A former Secret Service agent revisits his twenty-three-year career, including his time as Ronald Reagan’s bodyguard, in this “engaging” memoir (Publishers Weekly). Joseph Petro served for twenty-three years as a special agent in the United States Secret Service, eleven of them at the White House and four of those as the man on the shoulder of Ronald Reagan. From his days as an investigator in the field, to his time as the man on whom the life of the president depended, Petro’s journey through history is a singular look inside the most discreet law enforcement agency in the world; an unparalleled insight into Ronald and Nancy Reagan; plus an up-close-and-personal view of the late Pope John Paul II, whom Petro protected during his historic and extraordinary ten-day tour of the United States in 1987. The cast of characters in these never-before-told stories ranges from the Reagans and the Pope, to Frank Sinatra, Bob Hope, Mikhail Gorbachev, Fidel Castro, Margaret Thatcher, François Mitterrand, the Shah of Iran, George H. W. Bush, Dan and Marilyn Quayle, Henry Kissinger, Nelson Rockefeller, Gerald Ford, and would-be assassins. “A close-in view of how ‘the Great Communicator’ charmed critics and won loyal followers.” —The Christian Science Monitor “A fascinating portrait of Secret Service life.” —Library Journal

Prohibition Gangsters written by Marc Mappen and has been published by Rutgers University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-06-06 with True Crime categories.

Master story teller Marc Mappen applies a generational perspective to the gangsters of the Prohibition era—men born in the quarter century span from 1880 to 1905—who came to power with the Eighteenth Amendment. On January 16, 1920, the Eighteenth Amendment to the Constitution went into effect in the United States, “outlawing the manufacture, sale, or transportation of intoxicating liquors.” A group of young criminals from immigrant backgrounds in cities around the nation stepped forward to disobey the law of the land in order to provide alcohol to thirsty Americans. Today the names of these young men—Al Capone, Lucky Luciano, Dutch Schultz, Legs Diamond, Nucky Johnson—are more familiar than ever, thanks in part to such cable programs as Boardwalk Empire. Here, Mappen strips way the many myths and legends from television and movies to describe the lives these gangsters lived and the battles they fought. Placing their criminal activities within the context of the issues facing the nation, from the Great Depression, government crackdowns, and politics to sexual morality, immigration, and ethnicity, he also recounts what befell this villainous group as the decades unwound. Making use of FBI and other government files, trial transcripts, and the latest scholarship, the book provides a lively narrative of shootouts, car chases, courtroom clashes, wire tapping, and rub-outs in the roaring 1920s, the Depression of the 1930s, and beyond. Mappen asserts that Prohibition changed organized crime in America. Although their activities were mercenary and violent, and they often sought to kill one another, the Prohibition generation built partnerships, assigned territories, and negotiated treaties, however short lived. They were able to transform the loosely associated gangs of the pre-Prohibition era into sophisticated, complex syndicates. In doing so, they inspired an enduring icon—the gangster—in American popular culture and demonstrated the nation’s ideals of innovation and initiative. The Hidden White House written by Robert Klara and has been published by Macmillan this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-10-22 with Architecture categories.

The little-known story of the White House’s gutting and renovation during the Truman presidency: “Delightful and informative . . . plenty of entertaining drama.” —Publishers Weekly In 1948, President Harry Truman, enjoying a bath on the White House’s second floor, almost plunged through the ceiling of the Blue Room into a tea party for the Daughters of the American Revolution. A handpicked team of the country’s top architects conducted a secret inspection of the troubled mansion and, after discovering it was in imminent danger of collapse, insisted that the First Family be evicted immediately. What followed would be the most historically significant and politically complex home-improvement job in American history. While the Trumans camped across the street at Blair House, Congress debated whether to bulldoze the White House completely, and the Soviets exploded their first atomic bomb, starting the Cold War. Robert Klara reveals what has, until now, been little understood about this episode: America’s most famous historic home was basically demolished, giving birth to today’s White House. Leaving only the mansion’s facade untouched, workmen gutted everything within, replacing it with a steel frame and a complex labyrinth deep below ground that soon came to include a top-secret nuclear fallout shelter. The story of Truman’s rebuilding of the White House is a snapshot of postwar America and its first Cold War leader, undertaking a job that changed the centerpiece of the country’s national heritage. The job was by no means perfect, but it was remarkable—and, until now, all but forgotten. Includes photographs “Captivating . . . From bathtubs to bomb shelters, Klara leaves no piece of crumbling sandstone unturned and is as astute a storyteller as he is a dogged researcher.” —Denise Kiernan, New York Times–bestselling author of The Last Castle
