Caring For Victims Of Torture written by James M. Jaranson and has been published by American Psychiatric Pub this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1998 with Medical categories.

Since its beginnings in the 1970s, the field of torture rehabilitation has grown rapidly. A growing awareness about the practice of torture (more than 100 countries today practice government-sanctioned torture) and its effects on victims is leading to an increasing number of dedicated treatment centers. The health care professionals on the staffs of these centers need the best, most up-to-date information and advice they can get. This book delivers it. Caring for Victims of Torture contains all the collective wisdom of some of the most respected international experts in the treatment of victims of government torture -- all distinguished physicians -- including pioneers in the field of traumatic stress. Contributors discuss the most recent advances in knowledge about government-sanctioned torture and offer practical approaches to the diagnosis and treatment of torture victims. Organized into six main sections, this annotated volume provides an overview of the history and politics of torture and rehabilitation; guidance in identifying and defining the sequelae of torture; a framework for assessment and treatment; specific treatment interventions; and a discussion of ethical implications. In the final section, physicians working in the field offer firsthand accounts and address how they are trying to balance politics with caregiving. Focusing on the physician's role, this book is chiefly a clinical guide. But for advanced-level students, it serves as a thorough, up-to-date text and reference work. Religious leaders, lawyers, politicians, human rights advocates, and torture victims themselves will find it a valuable resource as well.

Processes Of Emergence Of Systems And Systemic Properties written by Gianfranco Minati and has been published by World Scientific this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009 with Computers categories.

This book contains the Proceedings of the 2007 Conference of the Italian Systems Society. Papers deal with the interdisciplinary study of processes of emergence, considering theoretical aspects and applications from physics, cognitive science, biology, artificial intelligence, economics, architecture, philosophy, music and social systems. Such an interdisciplinary study implies the need to model and distinguish, in different disciplinary contexts, the establishment of structures, systems and systemic properties. Systems, as modeled by the observer, not only possess properties, but are also able to make emergent new properties. While current disciplinary models of emergence are based on theories of phase transitions, bifurcations, dissipative structures, multiple systems and organization, the present volume focuses on both generalizing those disciplinary models and identifying correspondences and new more general approaches. The general conceptual framework of the book relates to the attempt to build a general theory of emergence as a general theory of change, corresponding to Von Bertalanffy's project for a general system theory.

Address the root causes of stalking behavior with this vital guide In the approximately thirty-five years since stalking was identified as a form of harmful behavior, addressing its social effects has largely fallen to the criminal justice system. There is significant evidence, however, to suggest that pure criminalization is an ineffective response, and that mental health treatment for people who stalk may be the only serious path to relief for stalking victim. Despite this, however, robust research into treatment for people who stalk remains rare, and relevant resources for mental health providers few. Treating Stalking is among the first comprehensive overviews of this vital subject. Treating Stalking readers will also find: Case examples and worksheets from authors’ practices Attention to multidisciplinary programs, including pharmacological and occupational interventions Detailed treatment of ethical and legal issues related to treating stalking Treating Stalking is a must-have for any psychologist or other mental health professional looking to treat patients who stalk.

Burnout In Families written by Charles R. Figley and has been published by CRC Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1997-12-29 with Medical categories.

Sleeplessness, depression, anxiety... these are common symptoms of the burnout that often accompanies living with a loved one who has experienced some kind of traumatic stress. It's well known that the loss of a child, a life-threatening injury, sexual assault or combat experience can affect the victim in traumatic ways, but what's often overlooked is how this trauma affects those closest to the victim - the family. Burnout in Families focuses on the emotional vulnerability of families exposed to the chronic or acute stress of one of its members. Editor Charles R. Figley brings together seven psychologists from around the United States to take a closer look at what's now known as secondary traumatic stress disorder - the burnout that occurs when family members care for or just live with other family members who have undergone a traumatic life event. The authors provide a comprehensive review of the available literature and offer solutions for treating and preventing family burnout and the marital and family discord that inevitably follows. Burnout in Families is an ideal text for university-level psychology, family therapy and social work courses.
