Recent years have seen major progress in the development of equations to describe the motion of fluid-particle mixtures and their application to a limited range of problems. With rapid advances in numerical methods and computing power we are now presented with new opportunities to use direct integration of these equations in the solution of complex practical problems. However, results so obtained are only as good as the equations on which they are based, so it is essential to have a clear understanding of the underlying physics and the extent to which it is reflected properly in these equations. In The Dynamics of Fluidized Particles, first published in 2000, Jackson formulates these equations carefully and fully describes the important existing applications that serve to test their ability to predict salient phenomena. This account will be of value to both starters and established researchers in the field, and also to people interested in applying the equations to practical engineering problems.

Particles And Fundamental Interactions written by Sylvie Braibant and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-11-16 with Science categories.

The book provides theoretical and phenomenological insights on the structure of matter, presenting concepts and features of elementary particle physics and fundamental aspects of nuclear physics. Starting with the basics (nomenclature, classification, acceleration techniques, detection of elementary particles), the properties of fundamental interactions (electromagnetic, weak and strong) are introduced with a mathematical formalism suited to undergraduate students. Some experimental results (the discovery of neutral currents and of the W± and Z0 bosons; the quark structure observed using deep inelastic scattering experiments) show the necessity of an evolution of the formalism. This motivates a more detailed description of the weak and strong interactions, of the Standard Model of the microcosm with its experimental tests, and of the Higgs mechanism. The open problems in the Standard Model of the microcosm and macrocosm are presented at the end of the book. For example, the CP violation currently measured does not explain the matter-antimatter asymmetry of the observable universe; the neutrino oscillations and the estimated amount of cosmological dark matter seem to require new physics beyond the Standard Model. A list of other introductory texts, work reviews and some specialized publications is reported in the bibliography. Originally published in 1926, this informative and detailed textbook is primarily aimed at university students studying applied mathematics for a science or engineering degree and contains a large number of useful examples to work though. Basic knowledge of elementary dynamics is assumed throughout, as is a working knowledge of differential and integral calculus. Answers can be found at the back of the book, as well as a summary of the methods of solution of the equations contained. Examples are mostly collected from a variety of past university and college examination papers, and notably rigid dynamics has been confined to two-dimensional motion and omissions have been made to all reference of moving axes. Covering the topic in its entirety, this book gives a panoramic overview of the subject and will be of considerable value to anyone with a keen interest in mathematics and engineering, as well as the history of education.

1. Objective and Scope Bubbles, drops and rigid particles occur everywhere in life, from valuable industrial operations like gas-liquid contracting, fluidized beds and extraction to such vital natural processes as fermentation, evaporation, and sedimentation. As we become increasingly aware of their fundamental role in industrial and biological systems, we are driven to know more about these fascinating particles. It is no surprise, therefore, that their practical and theoretical implications have aroused great interest among the scientific community and have inspired a growing number of studies and publications. Over the past ten years advances in the field of small Reynolds numbers flows and their technological and biological applications have given rise to several definitive monographs and textbooks in the area. In addition, the past three decades have witnessed enormous progress in describing quantitatively the behaviour of these particles. However, to the best of our knowledge, there are still no available books that reflect such achievements in the areas of bubble and drop deformation, hydrodynamic interactions of deformable fluid particles at low and moderate Reynolds numbers and hydrodynamic interactions of particles in oscillatory flows. Indeed, only one more book is dedicated entirely to the behaviour of bubbles, drops and rigid particles ["Bubbles, Drops and Particles" by Clift et al. (1978)] and the authors state its limitations clearly in the preface: "We treat only phenomena in which particle-particle interactions are of negligible importance. Hence, direct application of the book is limited to single-particle systems of dilute suspensions.
