This timely book provides detailed information regarding the latest treatment for psychiatric disorders among the growing population of older adults. The World Health Organization reports that between 2015 and 2050, the proportion of the world's older adults (≥ 60 years) will double from about 12% to almost 22% of the total population, and it is estimated that approximately 20% of older adults have a diagnosable psychiatric disorder. Many of these older adults are prescribed psychotropic medications, but these treatments can result in significant functional decline, cognitive decline, cerebrovascular adverse events, and death. The editors, in collaboration with fellow experts in geriatric psychiatry, provide the scientific background regarding the treatment of a range of psychiatric disorders among older adults. The volume features a comprehensive table of contents covering a range of psychiatry subtopics, such as neurocognitive disorders, depressive disorders, substance use disorders, and anxiety disorders. Each chapter adheres to the same easy-to-follow format, and amongst other information, includes evidence-based assessments, non-pharmacological and pharmacological therapies, potential side-effects and their treatments, and evidence-based treatment algorithms for each disorder. Treatment of Psychiatric Disorders Among Older Adults will be a valuable resource for psychiatrists, geriatricians, students, neurologists, advance practice nurses, psychologists, social workers, occupational therapists, physical therapists, and dieticians who care for older adults with mental health disorders.

Psychological Treatment Of Older Adults written by Michel Hersen and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-06-29 with Psychology categories.

This multiauthored introductory textbook could not have been conceived or brought to fruition 10 or 15 years ago. Indeed, at that time relatively little attention was accorded to the psychological needs of older adults. The general tenor of the field then was that older adults would not benefit from psychological intervention. As we now know, this was a faulty assumption that has been discredited with empirical data. Indeed, clinical research data adduced, primar ily in the last decade, clearly documents that older adults do benefit from specific psychotherapies that are tailored to their unique presentation of symptoms. Given the explosion of interest in this area (as evinced by increased investi gatory activity, national funding, and media attention) and the increased number of masters-and doctoral-level courses devoted to this topic, we felt that the time was right for a textbook in the area. Such flurry of activity also has been fueled by statistics showing how our population by the year 2030 will consist of 30% who are senior citizens. Moreover, since 12% of older adults in the community are estimated to have diagnosable psychiatric disorders and 40% to 50% of older adult medical inpatients have a concomitant psychiatric disorder, the task for clinicians in the next century will be overwhelming.

This book is a practical resource that will support the delivery of holistic mental health interventions in the primary and community care setting for older people. Primary care delivery is discussed in relation to both functional mental health problems, such as anxiety, depression, and psychotic and personality disorders, and acquired organic mental disorders of old age, such as dementia, cognitive impairments, and delirium. Careful consideration is paid to the complex relationship between mental and somatic health problems, as well as the impacts of multimorbidity and polypharmacy. Further topics include, for example, epidemiology, wider determinants of health, different care models, history taking, neurocognitive and capacity assessment, and pharmacological, psychological, and physical interventions. The wider goals of the book are to support the development of community resilience and self-care in older people; to promote universal access and equity for older people in order to enable them to achieve or recover the highest attainable standard of health, regardless of age, gender, or social position; and to promote pathways to care for older people with mental health problems respecting their autonomy, independence, human rights, and the importance of the life-course approach. This book will be an invaluable resource for all professionals who work with older adults with mental health problems and those training in these fields including physicians, psychiatrists, family doctors, geriatricians, general practitioners, nurses, psychologists, neurologists, occupational therapists, social workers, support workers and community health and social care workers.
