In optometric practice, age related macular degeneration (AMD) is a disease commonly seen in patients over the age of 65. As this disease can cause devastating effects on vision it is important to identify as well as treat and manage AMD with the most effective methods. Once AMD has progressed from the dry o wet form, intravitreal anti-VEGF injections are given to ameliorate vision and prevent the progression of the disease. The three anti-VEGF injections and how Lucentis, Avastin and Macugen. This literature review discusses these three injections and how Lucentis and Avastin are the most effective lines of treatment. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of irreversible blindness in people over the age of 50 in the developed world. Although majority of individual's suffering from the condition have the dry form of the condition, it is the wet AMD that results in detrimental vision loss.
