Excerpt from What May Be Learned From a Tree It was originally my intention to have published my Tree in eight parts, and to have brought them out in succession, as rapidly as possible; but I have decided, for the present, to stop at Part IV. A much larger subscription than I have yet obtained is necessary to enable me to carry out my original project. Trees will not grow without sap or sunlight, and if mine is, at present, only a mere shrub, and has not advanced to the condition of a California Sequoia, it is because I require more time and means. Do not suppose, reader, that I am at all discouraged, or that I have the slightest intention to give up the work; but the present delay is absolutely requisite in order that I may be able to meet the expenses which I have incurred in its publication. An author who appears before the world in the character of a moralist, and a lover of Nature, must endeavor to live a pure and blameless life, and be upright and honorable in all business transactions. No work which the press has received from my pen has been so much encouraged as the present one, and to my numerous kind friends and patrons I return my sincere thanks. It has been very welcome in many families, and I trust that it contains some good remarks which will do good. And here I must introduce a paragraph, printed on the cover of Part I: - "The question is simply this: 'Will this book do me any good?' 'Is it worth its price?' Gentlemen are respectfully requested to read and judge for themselves. As the author of the book, I wish it to stand entirely on its own merits. I wish no man to buy my book unless he thinks its perusal will do him good?" About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Handbook of the Trees of New England: With Ranges Throughout the United States and Canada There is no lack of good manuals of botany in this country. There still seems place for an adequately illustrated book of convenient size for field use. The larger manuals, moreover, cover extensive regions and sometimes fail by reason of their universality to give a definite idea of plants as they grow within more limited areas. New England marks a meeting place of the Canadian and Alleghanian floras. Many southern plants, long after they have abandoned more elevated situations northward, continue to advance up the valleys of the Connecticut and Merrimac rivers, in which they ultimately disappear entirely or else reappear in the valley of the St. Lawrence; while many northern plants pushing southward maintain a more or less precarious existence upon the mountain summits or in the cold swamps of New England, and sometimes follow along the mountain ridges to the middle or southern states. In addition to these two floras, some southwestern and western species have invaded Vermont along the Champlain valley, and thrown out pickets still farther eastward. At or near the limit of a species, the size and habit of plants undergo great change; in the case of trees, to which this book is restricted, often very noticeable. There is no fixed, absolute dividing line between trees and shrubs. In accordance with the usual definition, a tree must have a single trunk, unbranched at or near the base, and must be at least fifteen feet in height. Trees that are native in New England, or native in other sections of the United States and thoroughly established in New England, are described and, for the most part, figured. Foreign trees, though locally established, are not figured. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Trees in Nature, Myth and Art Thanks are due to Mrs. Hamerton and to its publishers, Messrs. Seeley 8: Co. My debt to this and other books I have quoted will be repaid, I hope, by my attracting readers to them. Besides books there are pictures; and beyond both literature and art there is Nature; and I hope it is not all too presumptuous for a happy, if somewhat desultory, scholar in her great school of life and beauty to chat for a brief while about some of the things that, with others' help, he has learned and learned to enjoy there. Excerpt from Trees in Prose and Poetry Trees, in their literary aspect, have as yet found small place in the nature books of to-day; but with the increasing amount of tree study in our common schools there is need of a collection of tree stories and poems. In the compilation of this little book the aim has been to present in the form of a supplementary reader for advanced grades the best literature, legendary, historical, and fanciful, that has been inspired by our common trees. Such a book may well have a place in every schoolroom. Where nature study is taught, the selections may be used as supplementary material; where nature study is as yet unattempted, an intelligent study of the selections must inspire the children with a love for the trees and a desire to know them better. There is no result of nature study that does so much to transform well-known scenes as a knowledge of the trees; and an important aid to this larger vision is familiarity with the thoughts of the great writers on these most majestic specimens of the plant world. Excerpt from A Treatise on the Nature of Trees, and the Pruning of Timber Trees: Showing the Impossibility of Increasing the Quantity, or Improving the Quality of Timber by Pruning The following remarks on the property of trees to adopt the best shape for the situation they occupy, do not relate to the Pine or Fir tribe, the trees of which have a peculiar form from which they cannot depart. The Lombardy Poplar, too, appears to be similar in this respect. I hope to show the fallacy of pruning with an intention of increasing the growth and bulk of trees, or improving the form, or the quality of the timber. Cutting away dead boughs from trees, or cutting away any jagged part broken by accident, will not be considered as pruning. Excerpt from Familiar Trees and Their Leaves: Described and Illustrated One of the most interesting things in connection with the study of nature and the pursuit of art is the study of color. It would take a massive volume profuse with illustrations to adequately describe and portray those phases of color which are common at any hour of the day in the field and woodland. Trees have their moods as well as men, and these are expressed in color which is influenced by, and largely dependent upon, sunlight and atmospheric conditions. To be sure, it is not quite possible to perfectly represent these moods in a process reproduction of a water-color study; but a suggestion of such character is far better than the complete absence of it, and, it must be acknowledged, modern processes are wonderfully faithful to form end the touch of the artist's brush. Excerpt from Studies of Trees IN presenting this volume, the author is aware that there are several excellent books, dealing with one phase or another of tree life, already before the public. It is believed, how ever, that there is still need for an all-round book, adapted to the beginner, which gives in a brief and not too technical way the most important facts concerning the identification, structure and uses of our more common trees, and Which considers their habits, enemies and care both when grow ing alone and when growing in groups or forests. In the chapters on the identification of trees, the aim has been to bring before the student only such characters and facts as shall help him to distinguish the tree readily during all seasons of the year. Special stress is laid in each case on the most striking peculiarities. Possible confusion with other trees of similar appearance is prevented as far as possible through comparisons with trees of like form or habit. Only such information is given concerning the structure and requirements of trees as will enable the reader better to understand the subsequent chapters. In the second half of the book, practical application is made of the student's general knowledge thu's acquired, and he is acquainted with the fundamental principles of planting, care, forestry, wood identification and nature study. The author recognizes the vastness of the field he is attempting to cover and the impossibility of even touching. Excerpt from The Tree Doctor: A Book on Tree Culture HE Americans are a people who love the beautiful, and yet, strange to say, they have destroyed the trees, which are among the grandest objects of all nature. This, however, has not been intentionally done. The pioneers made war on trees, slaughtered them, burnt them up and got rid of them the easiest and quickest Way they could devise. To a certain extent, this was excusable, as the land was needed for other purposes. Thousands now regret that they did not preserve some of the giants of the native forests. The majestic elm in this photograph is one of them. What would you give to have it in your yard? Our people now deeply deplore the mistakes that have been made, and are spending millions of dollars annually, in the hope of establishing sufficient shade and fruit trees for the requirements of man and beast. In spite of all their noble efforts they are meet ing defeat on every hand. The whole trouble is traceable to two oversights. It was my intention, five years ago, to point out these facts and the accompanying evils in a lec ture, by the aid of the stereopticon; but I saw that a thousand persons in that work could not reach the masses in' ten years. Then I thought I would write for some papers, butreadily discovered that but comparatively few people could be reached, and such read ing is not easily preserved. Finally, I determined to put the camera to work. Two authorities might disagree on a certain point, and the public say, They can't both be right; may be both are wrong. When, however, the camera gives you a picture, that is something from which you cannot get away. I had first intended to use fifty photographs, then made it one hundred. Again, finding there was a call for knowledge on the landscape and floral arts, I have used 175 photographs, and could use more to advantage, but cannot for the money. I desire to keep the book at so that it will be within the reach Of all. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
