This volume contains proceedings of the conference on Trends in Banach Spaces and Operator Theory, which was devoted to recent advances in theories of Banach spaces and linear operators. Included in the volume are 25 papers, some of which are expository, while others present new results. The articles address the following topics: history of the famous James' theorem on reflexivity, projective tensor products, construction of noncommutative $L p$-spaces via interpolation, Banach spaces with abundance of nontrivial operators, Banach spaces with small spaces of operators, convex geometry of Coxeter-invariant polyhedra, uniqueness of unconditional bases in quasi-Banach spaces, dynamics of cohyponormal operators, and Fourier algebras for locally compact groupoids. The book is suitable for graduate students and research mathematicians interested in Banach spaces and operator theory and their applications.

Written by a distinguished specialist in functional analysis, this book presents a comprehensive treatment of the history of Banach spaces and (abstract bounded) linear operators. Banach space theory is presented as a part of a broad mathematics context, using tools from such areas as set theory, topology, algebra, combinatorics, probability theory, logic, etc. Equal emphasis is given to both spaces and operators. The book may serve as a reference for researchers and as an introduction for graduate students who want to learn Banach space theory with some historical flavor.

rii application of linear operators on a Hilbert space. We begin with a chapter on the geometry of Hilbert space and then proceed to the spectral theory of compact self adjoint operators; operational calculus is next presented as a nat ural outgrowth of the spectral theory. The second part of the text concentrates on Banach spaces and linear operators acting on these spaces. It includes, for example, the three 'basic principles of linear analysis and the Riesz Fredholm theory of compact operators. Both parts contain plenty of applications. All chapters deal exclusively with linear problems, except for the last chapter which is an introduction to the theory of nonlinear operators. In addition to the standard topics in functional anal ysis, we have presented relatively recent results which appear, for example, in Chapter VII. In general, in writ ing this book, the authors were strongly influenced by re cent developments in operator theory which affected the choice of topics, proofs and exercises. One of the main features of this book is the large number of new exercises chosen to expand the reader's com prehension of the material, and to train him or her in the use of it. In the beginning portion of the book we offer a large selection of computational exercises; later, the proportion of exercises dealing with theoretical questions increases. We have, however, omitted exercises after Chap ters V, VII and XII due to the specialized nature of the subject matter.

The present volume contains the proceedings of the International Conference on Ap plications of Operator Theory held in Winnipeg, Canada (October 2nd to 6th, 1994), which was organized by the Institute of Industrial Mathematical Sciences (IIMS) of the University of Manitoba. At this conference 92 participants representing 15 countries par ticipated, and 64 papers were presented. This meeting was the second of a linked pair. The first was a program of advanced instruction held at the Fields Institute, Ontario, followed by a research conference. The first of these events gave rise to the volume "Lectures on Operator Theory and its Applications", published by the American Mathematical Society for the Fields Institute in 1995. These two events were the creation of the following Program Committee: M. A. Dahleh (M. I. T. ) P. A. Fillmore (Dalhousie) B. A. Francis (Toronto) F. Ghahramani (Manitoba) K. Glover (Cambridge) I. Gohberg (Tel Aviv) T. Kailath (Stanford) P. Lancaster (Calgary), Chair H. Langer (Vienna) P. N. Shivakumar (Manitoba) A. A. Shkalikov (Moscow) B. Simon (Cal. Tech. ) H. Widom (Santa Cruz) Both events focused on the following main topics: Infinite matrices and projection methods, linear operators on indefinite scalar product spaces, differential operators and mathematical systems theory and control. This volume contains a selection of papers in modern operator theory and its appli cations. They are dedicated to recent achievements and many are written by leaders in the mentioned fields.

This book is the first part of a two volume anthology comprising a selection of 49 articles that illustrate the depth, breadth and scope of Nigel Kalton’s research. Each article is accompanied by comments from an expert on the respective topic, which serves to situate the article in its proper context, to successfully link past, present and hopefully future developments of the theory, and to help readers grasp the extent of Kalton’s accomplishments. Kalton’s work represents a bridge to the mathematics of tomorrow, and this book will help readers to cross it. Nigel Kalton (1946-2010) was an extraordinary mathematician who made major contributions to an amazingly diverse range of fields over the course of his career.
