"This paper examines how the living standards of older Australians compare with those of the overall population, how much variation in living standards there is across the elderly population and how their living standards have changed over time. Home ownership, as an important aspect of the retirement support package in Australia, is also taken into consideration. The paper uses data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) Household Expenditure Surveys from 1988/89 to 2003/04 and the ABS Surveys of Income and Housing from 2003/04 to 2007/08"--Publisher's website.

This book examines claims that aging populations will create serious economic problems for various nations. It examines the question in large part through the eyes of researchers and legislators in three target countries: Australia, Japan, and the United States. These countries were chosen because of similar states of economic development and because all were experiencing a rapid aging of their populations. A comprehensive overview is provided of the economic issues related to aging populations. Several aspects are explored in more depth. To date, it is the most complete and thorough study of economic issues associated with population aging. After a brief review of the phenomenon of demographic aging, the authors give a summary of the major economic programs offered to the aged. Extensive research is used to evaluate the concept of dependency ratios and to predict the impact on younger and older persons of future economic and demographic growth. This discussion then provides the basis for a review of evolving retirement policies in the three countries. Special attention is given to the way pension plans have been designed, especially early and mandatory retirement policies. An assessment of the adequacy of retirement income follows. The final three chapters are devoted to policy options for the future, given trends in demographic aging. Social scientists and economists will be most interested in this study.

The report compares the living standards of different household types in Australia, including income quintiles, family types, housing tenure, age, income source, and state by state. It examines changes since 2004 and estimates further changes over the next 10 years. While the Australian economy has enjoyed a sustained period of economic growth over the past 23 years, that growth has not been distributed evenly - certain groups in society have enjoyed most of the gains and disadvantaged groups are forecast to be left even further behind.

This stimulating volume examines the many faces of Australia’s ageing population, the social and health issues they contend with, and the steps being taken—and many that should be taken—to help ensure a more positive and productive later life. Individual and societal ageing are conceptualized as developmental in nature, socially diverse, and marked by daily life challenges stemming from the country’s economic structures, attitudes, geography, political landscape, and infrastructure. Wide-ranging coverage (e.g., health, inequalities, employment, transportation) assesses options available to older people, and the role of families, employers, service providers, government agencies, and others in promoting or expanding those choices. The book’s double emphasis on challenges in older people’s lives and opportunities for enhancing their quality of life is on clear display as case studies examine policy issues—and propose solutions—in a societal and individual context. Included in the coverage: · Australian developments in ageing: issues and history. · Cultural diversity, health, and ageing. · Indigenous Australians and ageing: responding to diversity in policy and practice. · Enhancing the health and employment participation of older workers. · Housing and the environments of ageing. · Health services and care for older people. The rich examples in Ageing in Australia contain a depth of understanding and evidence for sociologists, gerontologists and psychologists studying ageing, health care professionals providing care to older people, and policy analysts assessing areas for improvement.
