Summer reading loss accounts for roughly 80 percent of the rich/poor reading achievement gap. Yet far too little attention is given to this pressing problem. This timely volume now offers not only a comprehensive review of what is known about summer reading loss but also provides reliable interventions and guidance. Written by acknowledged experts and researchers on reading, remedial reading, and special education, this collection describes multiple models of innovative summer reading and book distribution initiatives as well as research-based guidelines for planning a successful summer reading program, including tips on book selection, distribution methods, and direction for crucial follow-up. Most important, the authors clearly show how schools and communities can see greater academic gains for students from low-income families using the methods described in this book than they can from much more costly interventions.

From the moment society first conceived an education system, there has been a need to have critical discussions about how best to provide education, and how best to create education policy. Because of the rapidly changing and fluid nature of technology, education has become the most crucial component to having a better life around the globe. The purpose of Emerging Trends in Education Policy: Unapologetic Progressive Conversations, is to highlight impactful policies, strategies, initiatives, and approaches to educational reform globally, nationally, as well as locally through an edited volume. Emerging Trends in Education Policy offers readers the opportunity to read contributions from researchers and policymakers who like to make a ruckus and speak to an audience that appreciates disruption. Emerging Trends in Education Policy provides space for researchers to take intellectual risks and policymakers to be on the cutting edge of educational policy change. Educators often do not have the time to research and propose policy recommendations despite the fact they are the people that deliver the content. Professors often delay their more provocative findings and suggestions until after full tenure. By encouraging chapters from professors that were K-12 teachers at one time first, and researchers second, Emerging Trends in Education Policy: Unapologetic Progressive Conversation fulfills the need for innovative policy reform based on recommendations from practitioners with direct knowledge in the field.

Free speech has been a historically volatile issue in higher education. In recent years, however, there has been a surge of progressive censorship on campus. This wave of censorship has been characterized by the explosive growth of such policies as "trigger warnings" for course materials; "safe spaces" where students are protected from speech they consider harmful or distressing; "micro-aggression" policies that often strongly discourage the use of words that might offend sensitive individuals; new "bias-reporting" programs that consist of different degrees of campus surveillance; the "dis-invitation" of a growing list of speakers, including many in the mainstream of American politics and values; and the prominent "shouting down" or disruption of speakers deemed inconsistent with progressive ideology. Not to be outdone, external forces on the right are now engaging in social media bullying of speakers and teachers whose views upset them. The essays in this collection, written by prominent philosophers, political scientists, sociologists, and legal scholars, examine the issues at the forefront of the crisis of free speech in higher education. The contributors address the broader historical, cultural, legal, and normative contexts of the current crisis, and take care to analyze the role of "due process" in protecting academic freedom and individuals accused of misconduct. Additionally, the volume is unique in that it advances practical remedies to campus censorship, as the editors and many of the contributors have participated in movements to remedy limitations on free speech and open inquiry. The Value and Limits of Academic Speech will educate academic professionals and informed citizens about the phenomenon of progressive censorship and its implications for higher education and the republic.
