Desde 2010, las relaciones entre Cataluña y el resto del Estado parecen haber quedado bloqueadas en un infinito pantano de incomprensión mutua, insatisfacción y conflicto. Para Miquel Iceta, la visión unitarista que de España tiene el PP y la voluntad separatista de una mayoría del Parlamento catalán se retroalimentan mutuamente al tiempo que son incapaces de buscar (o sencillamente no quieren) una alternativa a un conflicto estéril que, en el mejor de los casos, desperdicia energías y, en el peor, comportará una confrontación en la que todos saldrán perdiendo. Los partidarios de la Tercera Vía, y en particular los socialistas catalanes, insisten en que no hay solución que no pase por la vía del diálogo, la negociación y el pacto. Y en que no hay atajos ni soluciones unilaterales ni caminos que pretendan desconocer la legalidad; no se puede olvidar que la sociedad catalana está dividida con respecto a la independencia casi a partes iguales. La Tercera Vía persigue mantener la unidad civil de los catalanes sin introducir un elemento de fractura de consecuencias imprevisibles. Se trata de mejorar el autogobierno y la financiación, y conseguir una participación eficaz en la gobernación del conjunto de España a través de las correspondientes instituciones de tipo federal. Una vía, en palabras de Ángel Gabilondo, “como convocatoria a todo un proceso de transformación de la mirada, una modificación, incluso, del alcance de los objetivos, que no quedan reducidos a lo más inmediato”.
