This book gives the reader the ability to make new inroads to understanding how faith, belief, and religion not only differ but also how they can contribute to comparative theology. These three topics, broadly covered herein, can heighten the understanding of the Sacred by those who study them. As to a few preliminaries, what is faith? Further, what is belief? Which one comes first in a person’s journey toward the Sacred? Moreover, does religion factor into these two terms, and if so, where and how? Does Augustine’s well-worn line “faith seeking understanding” mean anything today? If it does, would it mean belief comes prior to faith and/or religion? One can argue both sides of this debate and still be considered “orthodox,” seemingly. Perhaps it is the case that belief precedes faith most of the time, but not all of the time. Perhaps it is the other way around. What, exactly, is the demarcation between belief and faith? Many a person believes a thing to be true in their very bones; such a stance borders on what is commonly referred to as faith. Is religion the combination of belief and faith together into a coherent system of thought, or is it emergent from the two, existing as a separate mental (or spiritual) entity? Philosopher of biology Michael Ruse (1940–2024) was a leading voice in the “science and religion” debates of our times. While himself a “nonbeliever,” he contended that an informed and intelligent person can be perfectly “religious,” even in this age of science. "The early Middle Ages provided twentieth-century poets with the material to re-imagine and rework local, religious, and national identities in their writing. Poet of the Medieval Modern focuses on a key figure within this tradition, the Anglo-Welsh poet and artist David Jones (1895-1974): representing the first extended study of the influence of early medieval English culture and history on Jones and his novel-length late modernist poem The Anathemata (1952). Jones's second major poetic project after In Parenthesis (1937), The Anathemata fuses Jones's visual and verbal arts to write a Catholic history of Britain as told through the history of man-as-artist. Drawing on unpublished archival material including manuscripts, sketches, correspondence, and, most significantly, the marginalia from David Jones's Library, this volume reads with Jones in order to trouble the distinction between poetry and scholarship. This book examines the societal dynamics of memory politics in Russia. Since Vladimir Putin became president, the Russian central government has increasingly actively employed cultural memory to claim political legitimacy and discredit all forms of political opposition. The rhetorical use of the past has become a defining characteristic of Russian politics, creating a historical foundation for the regime’s emphasis on a strong state and centralised leadership. Exploring memory politics, this book analyses a wide range of actors, from the central government and the Russian Orthodox Church, to filmmaker and cultural heavyweight Nikita Mikhalkov and radical thinkers such as Aleksandr Dugin. In addition, in view of the steady decline in media freedom since 2000, it critically examines the role of cinema and television in shaping and spreading these narratives. How does Christian faith integrate with capitalism? This question has been at the heart of Christian ethics for more than three hundred years, but rarely as complex and important as now. The polarizing influence of consumer capitalism has extended into virtually every domain of human life. On the one hand, capitalism has contributed to increases in standards of living and life expectancy, especially among those in extreme poverty. On the other, it has exacerbated income inequality, environmental damages, and social displacement. For contemporary American evangelical theology, this is problematic. It has long been on a quest to show that Christian faith harmonizes with capitalistic enterprise. But can faith harness the transformational power of consumer capitalism without being affected by its excesses? For many, the election of Donald Trump as president has revealed a great divide within American evangelicalism about the links between Christianity, economic power, and moral character.
