Material loss due to wear and corrosion and high resistance to motion generate high costs. Therefore, minimizing friction and wear is a problem of great importance. This book is focused on the tribological behavior of functional surfaces. It contains information regarding the improvement of tribological properties of sliding elements via changes in surface topography. Tribological impacts of surface texturing depending on the creation of dimples on co-acting surfaces are also discussed. The effects of various coatings on the minimization of friction and wear and corrosion resistance are also studied. Friction can be also reduced by introducing a new oil.

This book provides final year undergraduate students, graduate students, research scientists and engineers with an up-to-date overview of the power of using surface analytical techniques for probing complex solid surfaces and lubricants as well as for understanding their interactions in tribological systems. The first three introductory chapters illustrate the need for surface analysis in tribology and the essentials of the analytical techniques. Following these, eight chapters on applications give insight into the contribution of the major analytical techniques to tribology. These chapters are divided into three groups. The first group deals with the applications of surface analytical techniques to the study of the adhesion, friction, deformation, wear, structure and chemistry of solid surfaces at the atomic scale or in well-defined conditions. The second group focuses mainly on solid lubricants and tribological surface modifications. Lastly, the third group covers liquid lubricants in molecularly thin-film lubrication and in boundary lubrication and their interactions with surfaces.

Machining and Tribology provides insight into both the role of tribology in machining and the effects of various machining processes on tribology, exploring topics such as machining mechanisms, coolant technology, tool wear, and more. Covering the latest research, the book starts by looking at the tribological aspects of turning, milling, and drilling processes. From there, it explores the effects of different coolants such as flood, minimum quantity lubrication, and cryogenics on machining forces, tool wear, friction, chip formation, and surface generation during various machining processes. Tribological considerations of machined components follow, and the volume concludes with chapters covering simulation scenarios for predicting machining forces, tool wear, surface generation, and chip formation. - Draws upon the science of tribology to better understand, predict, and improve machining processes - Covers tribology in different types of machining such as turning, milling, grinding, abrasive jet machining, and others - Explores the underlying mechanisms of coolant contributions on machining processes - Applies simulation techniques to explore the mechanism of nano-machining

The word tribology was fIrst reported in a landmark report by P. Jost in 1966 (Lubrication (Tribology)--A Report on the Present Position and Industry's Needs, Department of Education and Science, HMSO, London). Tribology is the science and technology of two interacting surfaces in relative motion and of related subjects and practices. The popular equivalent is friction, wear and lubrication. The economic impact of the better understanding of tribology of two interacting surfaces in relative motion is known to be immense. Losses resulting from ignorance of tribology amount in the United States alone to about 6 percent of its GNP or about $200 billion dollars per year (1966), and approximately one-third of the world's energy resources in present' use, appear as friction in one form or another. A fundamental understanding of the tribology of the head-medium interface in magnetic recording is crucial to the future growth of the $100 billion per year information storage industry. In the emerging microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) industry, tribology is also recognized as a limiting technology. The advent of new scanning probe microscopy (SPM) techniques (starting with the invention of the scanning tunneling microscope in 1981) to measure surface topography, adhesion, friction, wear, lubricant-fIlm thickness, mechanical properties all on a micro to nanometer scale, and to image lubricant molecules and the availability of supercomputers to conduct atomic-scale simulations has led to the development of a new fIeld referred to as Microtribology, Nanotribology, or Molecular Tribology (see B. Bhushan, J. N. Israelachvili and U.

Tribological Aspects of Additive Manufacturing provides a technical discussion on the roles of the 3D printing process in processing polymeric-, metallic-, and ceramics-based additive manufactured products in order to improve the tribological properties. It explores design flexibility, waste minimization, and cost reduction. Emphasizing the various types of additive manufacturing technologies, this book demonstrates how these can effectively influence the tribological properties of additively manufactured components. It examines 3D printing process parameters, carbon fiber reinforcement, natural fiber reinforcement, and surface structure on tribological properties of 3D-printed parts. This book also covers wear and friction resistance of additively manufactured parts prepared with natural fiber and carbon fiber. This book will be a useful reference for undergraduate and graduate students and academic researchers in the fields of materials science, tribology, additive manufacturing, maintenance engineering, and 3D printing.
