This book breaks new ground in considering the nature and function of anthologies of poetry and short stories in twentieth-century Portugal. It tackles the main theoretical issues, identifies a significant body of critical writing on the relationship between anthologies, literary history and the canon, and proposes an approach that might be designated Descriptive Anthology Studies. The author aims to achieve a full understanding of the role of anthologies in the literary polysystem. Moreover, this study considers anthologies published in Portugal in the early years of the twentieth-century, the influential figures who made them, the works they selected, and who read them. It also focuses on the principal publishing houses of the 1940s and 50s, and how their literary directors shaped public taste and promoted intercultural transfer. The author reveals tensions between conservative, nostalgic anthologies that promote an idyllic vision of rural Portugal, and collections of poems that question and challenge the status quo, whether in respect of the colonial wars or repressed female sexuality. The last part of the book explores anthology production in the period following the Revolution of 1974, observing the co-existence of traditional anthologising activity with new trends and innovations, and noting the role of women, both as anthologists and anthology items.

Tricase (Italia) 2016, pp. 473-502]]A través de las páginas de la presente obra se despliega el acertado uso de las palabras justas y precisas, se nos muestran múltiples ejemplos del lenguaje poético, conciso y claro, depurado; como debiera ser el lenguaje jurídico: preciso y terso, sin arrugas o ambigüedades, inequívoco. Francisco Eugenio Díaz proviene de una sencilla familia de labradores. Su padre y su madre, con sus modos de trabajar, de vivir, y de hacerse querer, fueron sus principales educadores, además de don Marcos, su primer maestro. Estudia en el Instituto “El Brocense” (Cáceres). Cursa la Licenciatura de Derecho en la Universidad de Salamanca. Obtiene el título de Doctor en la Universidad Complutense, de Madrid. En ésta inicia su carrera académica de profesor de Derecho romano, bajo la dirección de D. Francisco Hernández-Tejero, hombre bueno y generoso, su Maestro. Es becario del Instituto Jurídico Español, del CSIC, en Roma; y, mucho después, disfruta de su año sabático de estudios, en Milán. Participa en numerosos congresos internacionales -en diversas ciudades de Europa y de Iberoamérica- presentando sus correspondientes ponencias referidas a cuestiones de Derecho romano, de Educación universitaria y de Derecho informático, especialidad esta última de la que ha sido un pionero. Desde los momentos fundacionales de la UNED pertenece a su Claustro de profesores. Siempre cuenta con la ayuda del primer Rector D. Manuel J. García Garrido. En la actualidad, es Profesor Emérito. Admirado y querido por todos los Profesores del Departamento. Mantiene una especial relación, de empatía en afectos y sintonía en pensamientos, con el Profesor Federico Fernández de Buján, prologuista de esta obra. De Francisco Eugenio ha publicado esta editorial dos libros: “Breve historia de Roma” y “Estudios de Derecho y Formación de Juristas”. El tercero es, por eso, “Los poetas no suelen hablar del tiempo”.
