The New York Times–bestselling author presents three exciting short urban fantasy novels—including a prequel story to the Diana Tregarde series! Arcanum 101: Diana Tregarde, practicing witch, romance novelist, Guardian of the Earth. Studying at Harvard, Diana is approached by Joe O’Brian, a young cop who has already seen more than one unusual thing during his budding career. The distraught mother of a kidnap victim is taking advice from a “psychic” and interfering in the police investigation. Will Diana prove that the psychic is a fake? Unfortunately, the psychic is not a fake, but a very wicked witch—and the child’s kidnapper. Drums: Jennifer Talldeer, shaman, private investigator, member of the Osage tribe. Most of Jennie’s work is regular PI stuff, but Nathan Begay brings her a problem she’s never seen before. His girlfriend, Caroline, is Chickasaw to his Navaho, but that’s not the problem. Somehow, Caroline has attracted the attention of an angry Osage ghost. Thwarted in love while alive, the ghost has chosen Caroline to be his bride in death. Ghost in the Machine: Ellen McBride: computer programmer extraordinaire, techno-shaman. The programmers and players of a new MMORPG find that the game’s “boss,” a wendigo, is “killing” everyone—even the programmers’ characters with their god-like powers. A brilliant debugger, Ellen discovers that the massive computing power of the game’s servers have created a breach between the supernatural world and our own. This wendigo isn’t a bit of code, it’s the real thing . . . and it’s on the brink of breaking out of the computers and into the real world.

Breslaw (history, U. of Tennessee) has created a fascinating reader--for undergraduate classes in history, anthropology, religious studies, or women's studies--surveying the subject of witches, witch hunts, and the larger political context of both. The sections, which cover Christian perspectives, non-Christian beliefs, diabolical possession, issues of gender, and a lengthy section on the Salem witch trials, each include an introduction by Breslaw, primary sources, then secondary commentaries on the sources. The latter are excerpts from books and articles. Annotation copyrighted by Book News Inc., Portland, OR

“Do you believe in magic?” This familiar question suggests magic is easily recognized but unreal. In Magic’s Translations, Margaret J. Wiener argues that such views are shaped by historical power struggles, especially in Europe’s relations with the wider world. Focusing on nineteenth- and twentieth-century Dutch interactions with Indonesians, Wiener reveals how colonial agents framed unfamiliar practices, practitioners, and objects as “magic,” rendering distinct phenomena fundamentally alike and advancing colonizing projects that deemed magic antithetical to reason and reality. While colonial authorities, including ethnologists, mobilized the concept of magic to differentiate Europeans from Indonesians, nature from culture, reason from superstition, and fact from fetish, their efforts produced unexpected outcomes: Some Indonesian artifacts and acts not only retained their power but invaded European experiences. As anthropologists were among the key translators of magic throughout the world, Wiener intersperses accounts of magic’s translations in the Indies with reflections on anthropology’s ongoing engagement with the concept. She demonstrates that magic became an object of expert knowledge, political control, and popular fascination, rather than a self-evident category or relic of naïve belief.

In the heart of Eldoria, where enchanted forests whisper ancient secrets and hidden ruins cradle the echoes of forgotten lore, a malevolent curse looms over the land. Shadows of the Moonwell invites readers into a realm where the very fabric of destiny is entwined with the fate of a mystical moonwell, long believed to be the source of life and light. Now, as darkness encroaches, threatening to envelop the world in an eternal night, a group of unlikely heroes must rise to confront the shadows of their own pasts. At the center of this epic tale is Aelira, a fierce warrior with a haunted past, whose dreams are plagued by prophetic visions of the moonwell's demise. Her destiny intertwines with that of Bryn, a resourceful rogue who has spent his life navigating the treacherous alleys of the bustling city of Eldenstone. With a heart of gold hidden behind layers of cynicism, Bryn possesses the skills necessary to unearth the secrets buried within the ruins of their land. Together, they are joined by Thorn, a brooding mage whose mastery of the arcane arts is rivaled only by his struggle to control the power that courses through him. As the trio embarks on their perilous quest, they encounter the enigmatic Oracle, a being of unfathomable wisdom whose cryptic messages guide them toward their destiny. But they must also contend with Lord Valeon, a once-noble figure now twisted by ambition and greed, who seeks to harness the moonwell's power for his own dark designs. In a world where alliances are fragile and trust is a luxury, the adventurers must learn to unite their strengths and confront their fears. Shadows of the Moonwell weaves a rich tapestry of adventure, exploring themes of unity and the indomitable spirit of hope in the face of overwhelming darkness. As Aelira, Bryn, and Thorn delve deeper into the mysteries of the moonwell, they uncover not only the truth behind the curse but also the strength that lies within their bonds. Will they succeed in breaking the curse and restoring light to Eldoria, or will they succumb to the shadows that threaten to consume them all? With mesmerizing prose and a captivating world, this high fantasy tale promises to transport readers on a breathtaking journey where courage, friendship, and destiny await at every turn.

The family curse has been lifted, and the Widdershins sisters—Betty, Fliss, and Charlie—are free to leave the misty prison isle of Crowstone. But when a mysterious girl arrives at their inn accompanied by a will-o’-the-wisp, or ghost, it seems another adventure has landed on their doorstep. The stranger, named Willow, is an escaped prisoner from nearby Lament, desperate to clear her father's name before he's executed for a crime he didn't commit. Then Charlie is kidnapped by poachers, swept away on a dangerous mission in search of pirate treasure that's protected by a vengeful ghost. Betty, Fliss, and Willow pile into their trusty boat and embark on another incredible adventure, one that involves ghosts, fierce pirates, and a journey to a mythic island that exists only in legends.
