Das Rheingold, Die Walküre, and Siegfried. Parsifal. Tristan und Isolde. Both revered and reviled, Richard Wagner conceived some of the nineteenth century’s most influential operas—and created some of the most indelible characters ever to grace the stage. But over the course of his polarizing career, Wagner also composed volumes of essays and pamphlets, some on topics seemingly quite distant from the opera house. His influential concept of Gesamtkunstwerk—the “total work of art”—famously and controversially offered a way to unify the different media of an opera into a coherent whole. Less well known, however, are Wagner’s strange theories on sexuality—like his ideas about erotic acoustics and the metaphysics of sexual difference. Drawing on the discourses of psychoanalysis, evolutionary biology, and other emerging fields of study that informed Wagner’s thinking, Adrian Daub traces the dual influence of Gesamtkunstwerk and eroticism from their classic expressions in Tristan und Isolde into the work of the generation of composers that followed, including Zemlinsky, d’Albert, Schreker, and Strauss. For decades after Wagner’s death, Daub writes, these composers continued to grapple with his ideas and with his overwhelming legacy, trying in vain to write their way out from Tristan’s shadow.

Genetic Studies In Joyce written by David Hayman and has been published by Rodopi this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1995 with Literary Criticism categories.

Joyce criticism is a long way from having controlled the treasure trove of manuscript materials in the 63 volume James Joyce Archive. PROBES represents a new effort of incorporating manuscript research into critical concerns demonstrating in a practical manner how genetic work contributes to a fuller and more nuanced appreciation of Joyce's work. The organization of the essays is designed to highlight our two major but interlocking concerns: the nature and theoretical underpinnings of genetic criticism of Joyce and especially of Finnegans Wake, and some of the many ways that theory can be applied to the creative situation reflected in the notes and manuscripts. The questions raised in this volume are both current and important. Like Finnegans Wake itself, the manuscript record, because it is so complete, by stimulating the reader's curiosity and ingenuity, lends itself to a variety of approaches while rewarding specialized knowledge. Here too, as we decipher and transcribe, we are well advised to follow Joyce's advice and wipe [our] glosses with what [we] know. This volume will provide much that is new and of interest for all scholars of Joyce as well as scholars interested in the issues raised by genetic criticism.

James Joyce And The Politics Of Egoism written by Jean-Michel Rabaté and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001-08-13 with Literary Criticism categories.

In James Joyce and the Politics of Egoism, first published in 2001, a leading scholar approaches the entire Joycean canon through the concept of 'egoism'. This concept, Jean-Michel Rabaté argues, runs throughout Joyce's work, and involves and incorporates its opposite, 'hospitality', a term Rabaté understands as meaning an ethical and linguistic opening to 'the other'. For Rabaté both concepts emerge from the fact that Joyce published crucial texts in the London based review The Egoist and later moved on to forge strong ties with the international Paris avant-garde. Rabaté examines the theoretical debates surrounding these connections, linking Joyce's engagement with Irish politics with the aesthetic aspects of his texts. Through egoism, he shows, Joyce defined a literary sensibility founded on negation; through hospitality, Joyce postulated the creation of a new, utopian readership. Rabaté explores Joyce's complex negotiation between these two poles in a study of interest to all Joyceans and scholars of modernism.

Courtly Love written by Jean Markale and has been published by Inner Traditions / Bear & Co this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2000-11 with History categories.

A comprehensive examination of the rituals and philosophies that created and sustained medieval troubadour culture • Debunks the myth of the platonic nature of courtly love, showing the many sexual similarities to the Tantric practices of India • Reveals how the roots of courtly love go back to the matriarchal cultures of neolithic times The widespread turmoil that shook Western Europe as it entered the new millennium with the year 1000 prompted a vast reevaluation of the chief tenets of society. Foremost among these was a new way of looking at love and the place held by women in society. The Christian-inspired tradition that at best viewed women with contempt--and often with outright fear and loathing--was replaced by a new perspective, one in which women enjoyed a central role as the inspiration for all male action. For several hundred years courtly love, with its emphasis on adultery, carnal pleasures, and the power of the feminine, dominated European culture despite its flouting of conventional Christian morality. Medieval historians by and large have tended to regard courtly love as a sterile parlor game for the upper classes. To the contrary, Jean Markale shows that the stakes were much higher: the roots of the ritual re-created here go all the way back to the great mother goddess. In addition, the platonic nature attributed to these relationships is based on a misunderstanding of courtly love; underneath the refined poetry of the troubadours' verses flourished a system of sexual initiation that rivaled Indian Tantra.
