English summary: Joachim Wilhelm von Brawe (1738-1758) only wrote two plays, the bourgeois tragedy 'Der Freygeist' and the heroic tragedy 'Brutus'. Nevertheless, he succeeded in making a considerable contribution to the development of German drama in the second half of the 18th century. His aesthetics of revenge are contrary to the anthropological and poetological conceptions of his contemporaries, especially Lessing's, and already anticipate the works of the next generation of authors, Klinger's 'Zwillinge' or Schiller's 'Rauber'. By regarding Brawe's geniuses of revenge as 'radical losers' with reference to Hans Magnus Enzensberger, the causality of revenge, typical of his plays, is made comprehensible. German description: Nur zwei Dramen hat Joachim Wilhelm von Brawe (1738-1758) geschrieben, das burgerliche Trauerspiel 'Der Freygeist' und die heroische Tragodie 'Brutus'. Trotzdem ist es ihm damit gelungen, einen markanten Beitrag zur Entwicklung der deutschsprachigen Dramatik in der zweiten Halfte des 18. Jahrhunderts zu leisten. Die von ihm entwickelte Racheasthetik steht kontrar zu den anthropologischen und poetologischen Konzeptionen seiner Zeitgenossen, vor allem auch Lessings, und weist schon deutlich auf die Werke der nachsten Autorengeneration hin, auf Klingers 'Zwillinge' etwa oder Schillers 'Rauber'. Indem Brawes Rachegenies unter Bezugnahme auf Hans Magnus Enzensberger als "radikale Verlierer" verstanden werden, wird die fur seine Stucke charakteristische Kausalitat der Racheakte schliesslich nachvollziehbar.

Nietzsche's Mirror introduces the reader to one of the most central and pervasive themes in Friedrich Nietzsche's works—will to power. The book traces Nietzsche's use of the terms 'power,' 'will,' and 'will to power' as they are presented in both the works he authorized for publication and his literary remains, called the Nachlass. The author demonstrates that will to power as it is presented in the Nachlass differs from the way it is presented in the works Nietzsche authorized for publication before his collapse in 1889. Then it is argued that the problems that the Nachlass poses for scholars suggests that the Nachlass material should not be held in the same regard as the works Nietzsche authorized for publication. Because of the discrepancy between the published and unpublished writings, will to power should not be interpreted as a metaphysical principle operating behind the world, since the metaphysical-sounding passages are located in the Nachlass, but rather as a tool for interpreting relations, especially human relations, within the world. The final chapter examines Nietzsche's unique style of writing, which the author calls 'mirror writing.' Mirror writing is a technique Nietzsche deliberately employs in order to have such visionary themes as will to power, master morality, and eternal recurrence reflect the reader's values back to himself. Since this book is meant to be an introduction to will to power, at the end of each chapter is a list of additional books, so that the reader can delve further into the themes presented in the chapter, such as Nietzsche's biography, ethics, writings on truth, and eternal recurrence.

This new study looks at the relationship of rhetoric and music in the era's intellectual discourses, texts and performance cultures principally in Europe and North America. Catherine Jones begins by examining the attitudes to music and its performance by leading figures of the American Enlightenment and Revolution, notably Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson. She also looks at the attempts of Francis Hopkinson, William Billings and others to harness the Orphean power of music so that it should become a progressive force in the creation of a new society. She argues that the association of rhetoric and music that reaches back to classical Antiquity acquired new relevance and underwent new theorisation and practical application in the American Enlightenment in light of revolutionary Atlantic conditions.
