Examines the lure of mountains in German literature, philosophy, film, music, and culture from the Middle Ages to the twenty-first century. Mountains have always stirred the human imagination, playing a crucial role in the cultural evolution of peoples around the globe and becoming infused with meaning in the process. Beyond their geographical-geological significance, mountains affect the topography of the mind, whether as objects of peril or attraction, of spiritual enlightenment or existential fulfillment, of philosophical contemplation or aesthetic inspiration. This volume challenges the oversimplified assumption that human interaction with mountains is a distinctly modern development, one that began with the empowerment of the individual in the wake of Enlightenment rationalism and Romantic subjectivity. These essays by European and North American scholars examine the lure of mountains in German literature, philosophy, film, music, and culture from the Middle Ages to the present, with a focus on the interaction between humans and the alpineenvironment. The contributors consider mountains not as mere symbolic tropes or literary metaphors, but as constituting a tangible reality that informs the experiences and ideas of writers, naturalists, philosophers, filmmakers, and composers. Overall, this volume seeks to provide multiple answers to questions regarding the cultural significance of mountains as well as the physical practice of climbing them. Der Franziskaner Pater Hadrian W. Koch OFM aus dem Kloster Kreuzburg in Großkrotzenburg (geboren am 28.10.1944 in Großenlüder als Willibald Koch) ist bekannt für seine große theologische und rhetorische Kompetenz und seine Sprachbrillanz. Er hat die Gabe, Menschen zu berühren und zu begeistern. Er ist eine besonders charismatische Persönlichkeit mit großem Geist und Humor und ein Vorbild franziskanischer Hingabe. Anlässlich des 50jährigen Priesterjubiläums des Paters wurde dieses Buch herausgeben mit zahlreichen Predigten und weiteren Texten, die P. Hadrian für unterschiedlichste Anlässe schrieb, zum Vortrag im Rundfunk, in Printmedien, auf der Kanzel oder als Referent. Darüber hinaus enthält das Buch Grußworte zu seinem Jubiläum, zahlreiche Fotos, einen Lebenslauf und weitere Informationen über den Jubilar. P. Hadrian ist Autor von Beiträgen in Printmedien, verschiedenen diözesanen Kirchenzeitungen, der Predigtzeitschrift `Gottes Wort im Kirchenjahr ́ und er war bei der Deutschen Welle und im Deutschlandradio sowie im Hessischen Rundfunk zu hören. Weiterhin war er Redakteur der Zeitschriften `Bruder Franz ́ und `Mit Franziskus unterwegs ́ und ein gefragter Referent und Exerzitienleiter. Viele Jahre war er als Internatsleiter und Religionslehrer am Franziskanergymnasium in Großkrotzenburg tätig. Durch sein ausgeprägt analytisches, kritisches Denken und seinen Gestaltungswillen in Bezug auf die Herausforderungen in Gesellschaft und Kirche war er immer bereit, Verantwortung zu übernehmen. So war er lange Jahre Guardian des Konvents an der Kreuzburg, Teil der Provinzleitung der Thüringischen Franziskanerprovinz und nach der Wahl seiner Mitbrüder Provinzialminister. Hier übernahm er die Leitung der Franziskanerprovinz von der hl. Elisabeth in Fulda und gestaltete die Zusammenlegung der vier deutschen Franziskanerprovinzen mit. Über Deutschland hinaus wirkte er als Generalvisitator und Generaldelegat, weiterhin übte er den Vorsitz des Franziskanischen Bildungswerkes und der Stiftung Franziskanische Bildung und Erziehung aus und war Teil des Leitungsteams Forum der Orden sowie Präsident des CCFMC (Franziskanisch-Missionarischer Fernkurs) Würzburg.
