Gilbert's libretti of the comic operas composed by Arthur Sullivan are hugely well known, and lines such as "e;let the punishment fit the crime"e; have entered the English lexicon - but his short stories also deserve to be rediscovered by the modern reader. This collection, carefully curated by the secretary of the W.S. Gilbert Society, brings together the best of these sharp, clever, comical tales - many of which are published here for the first time since their first appearance in ephemeral magazines - enriched with the author's own illustrations. The stories feature many of the powerful motifs so associated with his work - fairies, elixirs, magic - and a wide variety of characters - from burglars to barristers and shopkeepers to gentlemen. This volume is shot through with the observational wit which drove Gilbert and Sullivan's works to fame, and constitutes a hugely enjoyable companion for fans of the pair's theatrical oeuvre.

Those who have read other works by the Marquis de Sade, particularly "The 120 Days of Sodom," and are aware of the vast scope he gives to the word libertinism, will find a Sade this time more sensual than perverse. And this is not a negative factor; on the contrary, the Marquis's writing surprises with its quality and beauty. However, promiscuity is present throughout the work. His critique remains constantly aimed at holy women, virgins, and institutions such as the clergy and marriage, which led to his works being censored even a century after their publication. In this complete edition of "Contes Libertins," the reader will find 14 stories that represent an excellent sample of the irreverent, provocative, and boundless Marquis de Sade.

I hardly know yet what it was all about, and at the time I had not an idea. I don’t think I was more of a fool than most fellows of my age at Draven’s, and I rather hope I wasn’t an out-and-out cad. But when it all happened, I had my doubts on both points, and could explain the affair in no other way than by supposing I must be like the lunatic in the asylum, who, when asked how he came to be there, said, “I said the world was mad, the world said I was mad; the world was bigger than I was, so it shut me up here!”

The Oxford Handbook Of Percy Bysshe Shelley written by Madeleine Callaghan and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013 with History categories.

The Oxford Handbook of Percy Bysshe Shelley takes stock of current developments in the study of a major Romantic poet and prose-writer, and seeks to advance Shelley studies beyond the current scholarship. It consists of forty-two chapters written by a prestigious international cast of established and emerging scholar-critics, and offers the most wide-ranging single-volume body of writings on Shelley. The volume builds on the textual revolution in Shelley studies, which has transformed understanding of the poet, as critics are able to focus on what Shelley actually wrote. This Handbook is divided into five thematic sections: Biography and Relationships; Prose; Poetry; Cultures, Traditions, Influences; and Afterlives. The first section reappraises Shelley's life and relationships, including those with his publishers through whom he sought to reach an audience for the 'Ashes and sparks' of his thought, and with women, creative collaborators as well as muse-figures; the second section gives his under-investigated prose works detailed attention, bringing multiple perspectives to bear on his shifting and complex conceptual positions, and demonstrating out the range of his achievement in prose works from novels to political and poetic treatises; the third section explores Shelley's creativity and gift as a poet, emphasizing his capacity to excel in many different poetic genres; the fourth section looks at Shelley's response to past and present literary cultures, both English and international, and at his immersion in science, music, theatre, the visual arts, and tourism and travel; the fifth section concludes the volume by analysing Shelley's literary and cultural afterlife, from his influence on Victorians and Moderns, to his status as the exemplary poet for Deconstruction. The Oxford Handbook of Percy Bysshe Shelley brings out the relevance to Shelley's own work of his dictum that 'All high poetry is infinite' and continues to generate original critical responses.

With hidden gems such as ‘The Great Revolution in Pitcairn’, which imagines a society built on a deserted island, and ‘On The Decay of the Art of Lying’, which advocates for telling meaningful lies, Twain’s impressive collection offers something for every reader looking to discover the wit and charm of America’s greatest writer. Painting a captivating picture of 19th century America, this classic collection of short stories is perfect for Western lovers of Denzel Washington and Chris Pratt’s ‘The Magnificent Seven’. Mark Twain, pseudonym of Samuel Langhorne Clemens (1835-1910), was an American humorist, lecturer, journalist, and novelist. 'Senneval, you see in me your sister, the girl you seduced at Nancy, the woman who murdered your son, the wife of your own father and the ignoble creature who sent your mother to the gallows...' Who but the Marquis de Sade would write, not of the pain, tragedy, and joy of love but of its crimes? Murder, seduction, and incest are among the cruel rewards for selfless love in his stories; tragedy, despair, and death the inevitable outcome. Sade's villains will stop at nothing to satisfy their depraved passions, and they in turn suffer under the thrall of love. Psychologically astute, and defiantly unconventional, these stories show Sade at his best. A skilled and artful storyteller, he is also an intellectual who asks questions about society, about ourselves, and about life, for which we have yet to find the answers. This new selection includes 'An Essay on Novels', Sade's penetrating survey of the novelist's art. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

Sylvie And Bruno Complete Series All 3 Books In One Illustrated Edition written by Lewis Carroll and has been published by e-artnow this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-12-06 with Fiction categories.

Sylvie and Bruno is a novel for children by Lewis Carroll published in 1889. The work evolved from his short story "Bruno's Revenge," published in 1867 in Aunt Judy's Magazine. With its sequel, Sylvie and Bruno Concluded (1893), it was his final work for children. The novel has two main plots; one set in the real world at the time the book was published (the Victorian era), the other in the fictional world of Fairyland. While the latter plot is a fairytale with many nonsense elements and poems, similar to Carroll's most famous children's book Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, the story set in Victorian Britain is a social novel. The French philosopher Gilles Deleuze termed Sylvie and Bruno "a masterpiece which shows entirely new techniques compared to Alice and Through the Looking-Glass." Charles Lutwidge Dodgson better known by the pseudonym Lewis Carroll (1832 – 1898), was an English author, mathematician, logician, Anglican deacon and photographer.
