For most of this century, Mount Everest has been considered the ultimate symbol of human endeavour. Everest being the highest summit in the world, has been the crowning target for the world's most courageous mountaineers ever since the first attempt to climb it in 1921. This, in turn, has stimulated some of the finest writings and photography in the canon of mountaineering, brought together for the first time in this stunning volume. The authors and photographers range from the climbers on the epic attempts of the 1920s and 1930s, men such as George Finch and Howard Somervell, through to Sir Edmund Hillary, Tom Hornbein and Peter Boardman from the post-war decades, to such contemporary figures as Chris Bonington, Doug Scott and Stephen Venables. Peter Gillman's selection also includes some of Everest's most dramatic and controversial episodes, such as the disputed Chinese ascent of 1960 and the enigma of the yeti.

The first woman to reach the summit of Everest broke the barriers of a traditionally male domain. In this book, Stacy Allison tells her personal story of her struggle out of the trap of domestic violence, and of finally summoning the courage to leave an abusive marriage to discover a new self and a better love. She provides a look into the world of elite mountain climbing: the idiosyncratic, dedicated individuals who make up the international climbing community; the political and strategic manoeuvring before and during an expediton; the gruelling training and single-minded ambition; and the constant danger and threat of death.

Tibet S Secret Mountain written by Chris Bonington and has been published by Vertebrate Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-05-21 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

For Chris Bonington and Charles Clarke, long-time friends and expedition partners, few mountains were more alluring than Sepu Kangri. Known locally as 'the Great White Snow God', Tibet's nearly 7,000-metre mountain had never before been visited by Westerners. Armed only with a tourist map for reference, the two set off for this elusive peak in 1996. In the reconnaissance and two expeditions that followed, neither of them were expecting to be profoundly impacted by their experiences. However, they not only met their match in Sepu Kangri, but both found their expertise pushed to the limit. While Clarke acted as a travelling doctor, treating myriad ailments encountered along the way, including a life-saving diagnosis of an ectopic pregnancy, Bonington's love of technology saw him testing out cutting-edge satellite phones and computers, allowing them to communicate with the outside world for the first time on an expedition. Tibet's Secret Mountain is a story of discovery as much as it is an account of the expeditions, and it is this that sets it apart from other mountaineering memoirs. The focus not only on the climbing itself, but the experiences, people and tensions that accompany it, offers a poignancy that anyone with a love of adventure will identify with. Beautifully written and full of unfailing cheer, Tibet's Secret Mountain is Bonington and Clarke's love letter to mountaineering.

George is an entrepreneur extraordinaire having launched and led countless businesses and enterprises since he was 17. George was not born with a "silver spoon" in his mouth, but grew up in poverty under the harshest conditions. His resume reads more like a Forbes list of the Ten Most Influential Entrepreneurs than that of one man.The Cartoon Channel and Toon TV stand out among George's most prestigious accomplishments. George founded, created and served as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of The Cartoon Channel, now known as the Cartoon Network. With 250-300 million viewers per day, the Cartoon Network is the world's largest television network other than CNN in the height of their world dominance in global crisis. Toon TV is known today as Toon Disney, which is part of one of the world's most recognized entertainment channels. More recently in 2010, with a three billion dollar proof of funds, George made a bid to purchase MGM (Metro Goldwyn Mayer) in an effort to build the world's largest television network.Since 2001, George has been an active national and worldwide advisory board member of A Child Is Missing (ACIM). ACIM operates as the first response program that works exclusively with law enforcement in the first few critical hours of a child's disappearance. George is also the Co-Founder of the Missing Children's Registry-a global registry of missing children. In George's efforts to raise funds and awareness for ACIM, he created the organization Climb for America's Children (CFAC). Under the banner of CFAC he climbed Mt. McKinley and then Mt. Everest. Amazingly, George climbed and summited Mt. Everest just two-and-a-half months after undergoing five consecutive cancer surgeries. Then, after spending 77 days on Everest, he returned home to endure his sixth cancer surgery and is cancer-free today.George's life has by no means been an easy one. George has suffered financial ruin, corporate theft, mafia harassment, the loss of numerous family members, and cancer. George is an adventurer, explorer and God-made man who lives his life to glorify God! Read George's story-you'll come away inspired and encouraged to triumph in adversity!George's book also contains the bonus book, Never Quit! by Dr. Kenneth Friendly. George found Dr. Friendly's sermon series on this topic so inspiring that he gained permission to have the message series put into book form and publish it along with his book.

Morning Light written by Margaret Griffiths and has been published by Rocky Mountain Books Ltd this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

In the spring of 1982, 68-year-old George Griffiths sailed solo from Britain to Barbados, where he was met by his two sons. The younger son, Mark, joined his father to sail home to Canada by way of the Panama Canal and up the Pacific coast. Mark's older brother, Blair, flew home to begin work as a CBC cameraman documenting the Canadian Mount Everest Expedition Team, with its 26 climbers, 30 Sherpas and more than 200 porters. Six months later, Blair Griffiths was dead, crushed by a six-storey wall of Everest ice. Through heroic efforts the team finally managed to recover Blair's remains, and there followed a heartbreaking cremation on a pyre of rhododendron boughs. Eventually two of the team succeeded in summiting the mountain. In 1985, George Griffiths trekked with his grandson to Everest Base Camp, where Blair's ashes were laid, in order to say goodbye. In this place of awe and majesty among mountains and sky, father and adventurer found peace. Written from taped accounts, diaries, letters and reports, Morning Light: Triumph at Sea & Tragedy on Everest is a poignant saga of adventure and high emotion that celebrates the human spirit and its need to explore.
