Elles avaient été écrasées non seulement par l'ignorance, la pauvreté et une vie de famille éclatée, qui sont le lot commun de presque tous les détenus, mais aussi par des années - quand ce n'est pas une vie entière - d'abus physiques et sexuels exercés sur elles par les hommes. Aujourd'hui, la politique mise en œuvre dans les prisons de femmes consiste à humilier plutôt qu'à réhabiliter. Dans certaines sociétés, un homme qui a fait de la taule est considéré comme un héros. Pour une femme, c'est toujours une déchéance. 89 % des femmes incarcérées le sont pour des délits non violents. Est-ce vraiment nécessaire de les mettre en prison ? Regardez bien ces femmes. Elles ont eu le courage d'assumer leur culpabilité, de vouloir changer, de nous parler, avec leurs mots et leurs images. Ce sont les femmes à qui nous avons tourné le dos. JANE EVELYN ATWOOD.
