With some $200 million sunk into a real estate development on Kauai, the investment partners have a lot to lose if Peter Roosevelt succeeds in stopping the project for the sake of preserving Hawaii's rich and exotic environment. When Roosevelt is found dead in his home, his neighbor, Wayne Takei, is quickly arrested--and becomes the latest, and possibly the most difficult, challenge for Honolulu's top criminal defense attorney, Pancho McMartin. The obstacles to proving Takei's innocence are daunting. His gun was the murder weapon. He has no alibi. And his affair with Roosevelt's wife provides ample motive. Lies and deception quickly plague the proceedings as Pancho and his team wade through a slew of suspicious characters, all of whom have alibis. Suspense is high as time is running out for Pancho to save his client from a lifetime in prison. This is David Myles Robinson's fourth novel in the increasingly popular Pancho McMartin legal thriller series.

Tropical Scandal: A Pancho McMartin Legal Thriller is a wild ride from start to finish; once you pick it up, you don't want to put it back down. Tropical Scandal is the fifth installment in David Myles Robinson's series of Pancho McMartin legal thrillers. Based somewhat on bizarrely true events, this thrilling sequel is a tale of conspiracy, corruption, and murder. Shortly after the events of Tropical Deception, Pancho is approached by a washed up, alcoholic attorney whom he used to idolize to take over a murder case. The attorney, Isaac Goldblum, has learned that he is dying, and can no longer fulfill his cases. One of those cases, however, is that of his client, Dayton - an innocent man charged with murdering his grandmother. When Pancho takes over the case, he soon realizes that something isn't right and finds himself in the middle of the biggest corruption scandal that Hawaii has ever seen. With a little help from his friends, Pancho must get to the bottom of this case, prove Dayton's innocence, and maintain his finally hopeful love life. With five iterations of the Pancho McMartin series under his belt, it's astounding to see how Robinson is able to consistently bring something new to the table with each sequel. His experience in the legal world provides him with a wealth of stories but Robinson has a way of distilling his inspiration into good old-fashioned, page turning legal drama that can go any number of directions. As you read, you can't help but wonder, "Where is this going to go?" which makes the read that much more exciting; in a way, it's as if knowing he's covered so much ground in the earlier installments of the series enhances the experiences and builds suspense for what will happen next. And Robinson rarely disappoints. The series is full of twists, turns and exciting climatic moments, and Tropical Scandal offers the most spectacular premise yet, largely because there is truth to it. As is often the case with Robinson's legal thrillers, one of the most interesting things about Tropical Scandal is its exciting and accurate depiction of what a trial is like. Robinson is a master at setting the scene, building the tension, and getting you invested. What's more is that, after following Pancho through several cases, you feel like you should be able to predict what he'll say or do, but the hotshot (and sometimes grouchy) attorney always keeps you guessing; and it lands with jaw-dropping satisfaction each time he makes his next big break. Yet, at the same time, there's something very educational about the story. While, perhaps, Robinson aptly turns up the drama in his narratives, he's clearly more interested in the reality of the courtroom than many other writers in his genre, and his own experience in law combined with the input of his close circle uniquely qualifies him to balance the power of story with the intrigue of reality. Tropical Scandal is exciting and rewarding; David Myles Robinson doesn't disappoint! - Maincrest Media

Ecology And Natural History Of Tropical Bees written by David W. Roubik and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1992-05-29 with Nature categories.

Humans have been fascinated by bees for centuries. Bees display a wide spectrum of behaviours and ecological roles that have provided biologists with a vast amount of material for study. Among the types observed are both social and solitary bees, those that either pollinate or destroy flowers, and those that display traits allowing them to survive underwater. Others fly mainly at night, and some build their nests either in the ground or in the tallest rain forest trees. This highly acclaimed book summarises and interprets research from around the world on tropical bee diversity and draws together major themes in ecology, natural history and evolution. The numerous photographs and line illustrations, and the large reference section, qualify this book as a field guide and reference for workers in tropical and temperate research. The fascinating ecology and natural history of these bees will also provide absorbing reading for other ecologists and naturalists. This book was first published in 1989.

Economic Morality And Jewish Law written by Aaron Levine (1946-2011) and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-07-16 with Religion categories.

Economic Morality and Jewish Law compares the way in which welfare economics and Jewish law determine the propriety of an economic action, whether by a private citizen or the government. Espousing what philosophers would call a consequentialist ethical system, welfare economics evaluates the worthiness of an economic action based on whether the action would increase the wealth of society in the long run. In sharp contrast, Jewish law espouses a deontological system of ethics. Within this ethical system, the determination of the propriety of an action is entirely a matter of discovering the applicable rule in Judaism's code of ethics. This volume explores a variety of issues implicating morality for both individual commercial activity and economic public policy. Issues examined include price controls, the living wage, the lemons problem, short selling, and Ronald Coase's seminal theories on negative externalities. To provide an analytic framework for the study of these issues, the work first delineates the normative theories behind the concept of economic morality for welfare economics and Jewish law, and presents a case study illustrating the deontological nature of Jewish law. The book introduces what for many readers will be a new perspective on familiar economic issues. Despite the very different approaches that welfare economics and Jewish law take in evaluating the worthiness of an economic action, the author reveals a remarkable symmetry between the two systems in their ultimate prescriptions for certain economic issues.

Floral Mimicry written by Steven D. Johnson and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016 with Science categories.

Mimicry is a classic example of adaptation through natural selection. The traditional focus of mimicry research has been on defence in animals, but there is now also a highly-developed and rapidly-growing body of research on floral mimicry in plants. This has coincided with a revolution in genomic tools, making it possible to explore which genetic and developmental processes underlie the sometimes astonishing changes that give rise to floral mimicry. Being literally rooted to one spot, plants have to cajole animals into acting as couriers for their pollen. Floral mimicry encompasses a set of evolutionary strategies whereby plants imitate the food sources, oviposition sites, or mating partners of animals in order to exploit them as pollinators. This first definitive book on floral mimicry discusses the functions of visual, olfactory, and tactile signals, integrating them into a broader theory of organismal mimicry that will help guide future research in the field. It addresses the fundamental question of whether the evolutionary and ecological principles that were developed for protective mimicry in animals can also be applied to floral mimicry in plants. The book also deals with the functions of floral rewardlessness, a condition which often serves as a precursor to the evolution of mimicry in plant lineages. The authors pay particular attention to the increasing body of research on chemical cues: their molecular basis, their role in cognitive misclassification of flowers by pollinators, and their implications for plant speciation. Comprehensive in scope and conceptual in focus, Floral Mimicry is primarily aimed at senior undergraduates, graduate students, and researchers in plant science and evolutionary biology.

21st Century British Gothic written by Emily Horton and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-01-25 with Literary Criticism categories.

In this innovative re-casting of the genre and its received canon, Emily Horton explores fictional investments in the Gothic within contemporary British literature, revealing how such concepts as the monstrous, spectral and uncanny work to illuminate the insecure, uneven and precarious experience of 21st-century life. Reading contemporary works of Gothic fiction by Helen Oyeyemi, Kazuo Ishiguro, Sarah Moss, Patrick McGrath and M.R. Carey alongside writers not previously grouped under this umbrella, including Brian Chikwava, Chloe Aridjis and Mohsin Hamid, Horton illuminates the way the Gothic has been engaged and reread by contemporary writers to address the cultural anxieties invoked living under neocolonial and neoliberal governance, including terrorism, migration, homelessness, racism, and climate change. Marshalling new modes of diasporic and cross-disciplinary critical theory concerned with the violent dimensions of contemporary life, this book sets the Gothic aesthetics in such works as White is for Witching, Double Vision, Never Let Me Go, The Wasted Vigil and Ghost Wall against a backdrop of key events in the 21st-century. Drawing connections between moments of anxiety, such as 9/11, the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, ecological disaster, the refugee crisis, Brexit, the pandemic, and the Gothic, Horton demonstrates how British literature mediates transnational experiences of trauma and horror, while also addressing local and national insecurities and preoccupations. As a result, 21st-Century British Gothic can tests geographical, psychological, cultural, and aesthetic borders to expose an often spectralised experience of human and planetary vulnerability and speaks back against the brutality of global capitalism.
