This interdisciplinary study introduces readers to Friedrich Schleiermacher’s diverse pathways of reflection and creative practice that are related to the field of translation. Ding und Bild sind Schlüsselbegriffe der romantischen Poetik und Philosophie. Das hat auch die jüngste kultur- und literaturwissenschaftliche Romantikforschung erkannt. Allerdings untersucht sie Dinglichkeit und Bildlichkeit bislang als getrennte Problemfelder: Bildlichkeit scheint vorwiegend als Synonym für die Kraft der Imagination in der Frühphase der Romantik von Bedeutung zu sein, während Dinglichkeit als Indikator für das Verhältnis zum Realismus in der Spätphase der Romantik relevant ist. Ein Blick in die Texte der Romantik zeigt allerdings, dass beide Schlüsselbegriffe unabhängig von ihrer Phasenzuordnung zusammenhängen und dass die Übergänge von Dingen und Bildern häufig fließend gestaltet sind. Der Band untersucht das produktive Spannungsverhältnis dieser beiden Konzepte und ihre Vermischungen vor dem Hintergrund der historischen und systematischen Zusammenhänge der europäischen Romantik. Der Augenblick ist ein rekurrentes Motiv in der europäischen Lyrik. Der Moment des Sich-Verliebens, eine Schockerfahrung oder die günstige Gelegenheit, die man am Schopfe packt – all das kann der Augenblick sein. Der Autor entwickelt zunächst den Augenblick als Denkfigur und als Paradigma des modernen Bewusstseins, indem er die frühromantische Fragmentpoetik Friedrich Schlegels bestimmt, die Immanuel Kants Ästhetik fortschreibt. Anhand von Analysen der Gedichte der großen europäischen Dichter Giacomo Leopardi, Charles Baudelaire und Rainer Maria Rilke erweitert er die Strukturelemente des Augenblicks als ästhetische Kategorie. Dabei kommen ästhetische Überlegungen der Dichter ebenso zur Sprache wie eminente Augenblicksgedichte wie L'infinito, À une passante oder Die Sonette an Orpheus.
